Automatic.

You do not recover the cost when you trade, so it doesn’t save you there, but since there are so many fewer drivers today who can even operated a manual transmission car, when the time comes to sell, it’s a lot easier if the car has an automatic.

Also, if it's a new car, and something happens to the automatic within the warranty period, it's covered. On a manual, that's not necessarily true, especially the clutch, which is considered a 'wear' item, like brake pads and windshield wiper blades.

Manual is more fun to drive if the car is actually nice. I wouldn't want a Hyundai with a 5 speed in it but it's totally worth it in a nice sports or muscle car.
