Basically could a 1.8ghz core 2 duo run a game that requires at least 2.0 ghz processor w/o the need to overclock?

The speed is still 1.8Ghz. But you can run two programs at full speed or run multithreaded games FAST.

It is like having 2 cars that can do 100mph each. You can never run 200mph but you can do a lot more w/ 2 cars at the same time.

Gaming performance is lot more dependent on the capabilities of the graphics card. The gaming performance hit on a 1.8Ghz processor vs a 2.0Ghz would be minimal with a budget card but gets significant w/ the high end cards.

Overclocking is SAFE if you have good cooling and if you stay within stock voltages. A 200 to 500mhz overclock is a walk in the park for most processors nowadays.

No you cannot simply add them together. Everything Karz said is correct, but you have to remember that only one Core will work on the game at a time, and each core only runs at 1.8Ghz. So will it still run a game that requires a 2.0 Ghz processor, the answer is yes. The 2.0Ghz is based on Pentium 4s, which processed much less information per clock cycle than the new Core 2 Duos did. Remember Ghz just tells you how many clock cycles there are per second, not how much work is done each clock cycle. The Core 2 Duos do much more work per clock cycle, hence they will outperform Pentium chips even though they have a lower Ghz.

Dual Core .... applications can use individual cores and caches instead of queuing up on a single core processor. You can even set affinity for your processes in Win XP, you can set your media player to use one core and at the same time you can do some other processing on the other core ..

and Processor manufacturers can't push the frequencies too much, so they will go in from dual core to mainstream quad cores and even eight core ones are coming soon...
