Hi, Yes there is. With respect to the guy saying that all universities are made up of many colleges, Oxford colleges (eg. Merton, Magdalen, Christ Church, Balliol, etc) are not simply faculties and departments. Neither are they colleges as Americans would understand them. They are semi-autonomous institutions within the federal structure of the university. The university organises lectures, lab sessions, exams and awards the degree. Colleges organise your tutorials and provide you with accommodation, a hall where you eat and is usually the hub of your social life as it has a common room, bar, etc. As such you tend to identify with your college first, then the university. Ironically, given your answer, this is less so for graduates as their teaching is predominately organised by the faculty.

Correct about it certainly being there. Is one of the best and gave us a lot of the biggies of most fields.
I was going to ignore the question completely, but I had to say something about that answer concerning it being a collection of colleges and not a U the way we normally think of a U.
ALL universities are collections of colleges. Colleges are devoted to a particular field of study, such as language, or business, or science. Everyone who has ever gone to grad school can likely tell you the name of the grad school they went to, as well as the name of the U it was a part of. Undergrads are often unaware of this because they did not have to apply to the particular college, just the university.
It is easy to tell at some of the biggest schools, they will have big geographical divisions -- different blocks, even different campuses, for this college and that. Some smaller schools will put more than one college in the same building.
Hope this helps.

Of course. It has been there for many centuries. It is not, however, a university like those in the U.S., which are single schools. Oxford is a conglomeration of a number of different colleges.

Yes. It's about 1,000 years old, and you used to have to be a priest to teach there.
