I just watched the movie and I was confused about the ending. When the detective looks in his pocket and finds the smaller diamond, all of the sudden, he thinks of the lead robber. What did the small diamond mean? Thanks.

Well, if you remember in the flick, Denzel Washington's character has a girlfriend. He was sharing with his colleagues (and eventually with the lead robber) that she wants a commitment, but he's not ready. He sarcastically said something about how he doesn't have enough money to buy the ring that she wants.
The lead robber then says that it shouldn't be about the symbol of love, it's about the actual love. He pulls out of Washington's character that he truly does love her a lot.
When he pulls the diamond out of his pocket, it shows that the "cost factor" hurdle is eliminated and now he (Denzel) can propose to his girlfriend.

He stayed inside the bank, and left. He bumped the detective (Detective? Cop? Forgot, been a few weeks since I saw it) and slipped a diamond into his pocket as a gift, which relates back to the discussion they had inside the bank earlier on about marriage and love shouldn't be based on money. The old man who owned the bank used people and had no sense of morality or general human decency, which is why they chose to rob him and him alone, because he deserved it.

Clive Owen staged the bank robbery in order to obtain evidence against a certain someone (the old man who was throwing a fit through the entire movie... forgot the name) of his history in the Nazi regimen.
You have to admire Clive. His actions not so admireable, but his intentions were in the right place.
Just goes to show, never hide evidence in a safe that's not so "safe." Just burn the stupid thing!

He thought of Clive Owen when he saw the smaller diamond because he knew it was him. Clive Owen gave that to him as a present for Denzel Washington to give to his wife.

the thief placed the diamond there as a present to his finance..the dective said he was too poor to pay for an engagment ring
