It takes time, I had a friend who really really sucked at bbal now, now he is decent, he still isn't great, but, he does a lot of rebounds, not very smart though, he doesn't dish back out on the offensive rebounds and he always gets stuffed.

have him watch basketball clips on nba.com and then explain to him about how the players shoot,and what positions they play, etc....
have him practice a lot though so he can get better!

Since you were not specific in what areas he is lacking in, I would say practice dribbling with his head up and learn how to shoot bank shots.
Banks are easier and don't require as much "touch".
