Yes, most reputable doctors will try everything else before writing a sleep aid scrip for teens. Two good reasons: 1. Teens are notorious for abusing such drugs and 2. Teens can usually get over insomnia by getting to the root cause.

Some usual causes are:

You have your days and nights mixed up, staying up too late at night.

You don't get enough exercise. Exercise is wonderful stuff and will help your mood, self-esteem and everything. You will sleep more soundly if you're physically tired. Ride a bike, work out with weights or help your neighbor mow his yard.

You get too much sugar and caffeine during the day. Try getting off sugary, caffeinated drinks, especially. Drink water, chamomile tea with a bit of honey, apple juice, carrot juice. At night, drink skim milk.

You may be low on vitamin B, especially if you drink things with caffeine. Taking a B-50 supplement can help your mood, nerves, depression and insomnia. Take with food -- best early in the day because may give you energy.

If you still can't sleep, try something from the health food store that has Valerian in it. It's non-addictive and won't give you a groggy morning.

Sleeping pills can be used only if prescribed by the doctor, since he shall check ur age, health conditions and requirement of the power of the sleeping pills... I too got from the doctor's advice rather than across the counter at the medical shop.. He asked me not to continue after 10-20 days.. Since i might get addicted to it.. So Jus go to ur doctor.... All will be fine

melatonin works well for some people. Another great herbal help for sleeping disorder is valerian root. Valerian helps you sleep and also calms you down so you are not lying awake worrying and being depressed about stuff. No side effects and non-addicitive. You can buy capsules from most health food stores. Make sure it is high in mgms and start with the recomminded dosage. I have suffered with insomnia my whole life and Valerian has been a gift from the gods.

Do a lookup for the "DSM diagnostic and statistical manual for mental health"

It tells you which symptoms to fake, usually something like "8 out of the following 12"

Dont be a newby and fake all 12 symptoms or it is a give-away that you read the DSM, and they'll know you're lying.

Instead, do the smartest thing which is score a 7.5, so that the doctor will believe you're neither a definite score, nor an indefinite.

They'll be sympathetic and actually believe you suffer from the said disease.

Also, dont over-emphasize or sound rehearsed.

Also, you can research a private practice by looking at court-records online. If someone doesn't own their own property (and they're still renting) then usually they need more customers and are more willing to slide.

I'm not sure for a 14 year old they would do any sleeping pills. But again I'm no doctor! I'm on Lexapro and Ambien for depression and unable to sleep. Ambien is a dream! I highly suggest it!

Ask you doctor or pharmacist about Melatonin,I'm not sure if it's age appropriate but it's in the vitamin and mineral section. It is natural and it helps if you have a melatonin deficiency which is the natural chemical in your body that helps you sleep.I know most elderly people use it because as you age your levels deplete but definitely talk to a pharmacist or doctor about your age group. There may be other alternatives for you.Such as Calm Forte for kids!Hope it helps!

It is interesting that the most common side effects of prescription sleep aids are the same as the symptoms of sleeplessness.

Try L-Tryptophan, an amino acid your body makes that assists sleep and particularly REM sleep, that is notoriously missing in Rx products.
