Well the top 3 are Washington, Lincoln and Roosevelt according to most historians.

I am a graduate student of history and for along time I resisted Washington as number 1 but the more I've studied and read the more I agree that he is without a doubt the best president to ever serve for a lot of reasons but a couple I'd like to hilight because I feel they are relevant today.

He wasn't afraid to put himself in physical danger to accomplish what he believed. He lead his troops and he inspired his soldiers.
He relinquished power when he could have been King. Could you see the present George doing that?
He helped create, guide and nurture this country and he put the good of the country ahead of his personal or political beliefs.

Thomas Jefferson is my favorite president. He wanted to have a simple life like the people and he believed in minimal government control. He was also very strict on not having religion play a role in the government. I can't believe no one has said him yet... he was a wonderful president, that doesn't come very often.

James K. Polk

He basically made three campaign promises:

1. To lower tariffs, which he did
2. To continue Westward expansion, which he did (Oregon and Texas)
3. To serve only one term and go home, which he did.

I have three, FDR, Harry Truman, and Eisenhower. All these people had integrity and were honest.
The nightmare is still in office!

George W. Bush!!

He has saved America from the devestating blow of terrorism!!

He has created the best economy since WW2.

Hail to the Chief!!

EDIT:

Alav,

If you go back and study Thomas Jefferson's history a little better you will he in fact did promote Jesus and the Bible in government and education.
And I highly regard him for his efforts in that aspect!
