Start by looking at the coverage map for each company and see what is happening in the area you live and where you travel. You will find that some parts of the country only have coverage along the interstates and other parts only have analog, dropping the digital features. More interestingly, you may find that a wonderful feature of your plan - like free calls to people on the same plan don't really work for free if you are roaming and "borrowing service" from another company.
Cell phones are a lot more of a bargain if you don't use them for daytime chatting, get free long distance and free roaming and buy just enough minutes so you don't go over.
Would have been nice if you said what part of the country you lived in, how many in the family, how many phones you want and is that modern phone or modem phone.

Definitely go with one of the major providers that have a website, because that makes it so much more helpful when paying your bill or if you have problems, contacting them via the internet instead of having to use your home phone to call the cell phone company.
I'd look up the various service providers and use the maps they have to see if your region is covered and what kind of service they have. I made the mistake of ordering a phone on the internet without doing that first, and I went with Cingular, and when it got to my door... I had no service at my house! I had to travel about 8 miles away to get even one bar of service.
Also, most companies have a certain amount of time that you can cancel your contract without having to pay the cancellation fee if you're unhappy with the service after you get your phone. I'd definitely ask what each company's limit is, that way you know how long you have to decide if you like it or not after you get it.
Good luck! :)

Okay first you decide which cell phone company you want to deal with... Everyone has their own personal opinion I have AT&T and i don't have a problem. Usually if you sign a two year contract you will get the phone for free or you have to pay a certain amount of money it actually depends on the phone. But when you first get the phone you usually pay full retail then you'll get a rebate card in the mail... I just used mine to pay the phone bill it really doesn't matter. After 30 days you are stuck with the phone and you can't break the contract without paying a fee for each line broken.. but if you get insurance on each phone and the phone breaks than you'll just have to open an insurance claim and you'll pay a deductable and receive a new phone... that's pretty much it pick a company, an affordable plan, get a the phones you want and you'll get a rebate if applicable, and pay your bill.

Verizon has good phones ane good network. You can join the family plan.
Keep in mind that some of these providers also provide discount for people employed with some businesses. The link to check if you are eligible is

They have very good phones too. Consider the LG enV when you sign up, with little coaxing you should be able to get that free at verizon store or at some authorized distributors.

DON'T GET TMOBILE!!! i have them and their service is garbage.. Verizon has fabulous coverage- i always use my friends cellphone at my place because his verizon phone gets more service than my tmobile phone. also i think sprint runs off the cingular towers so you should not get either one. but when it comes to the better of plans, cingular has better minutes plans than verizon- also they have that rollover feature.. where if you don't use up all your minutes, they'll rollover and add them to your next months minutes. also their family plan seems pretty good.

My family has Verizon. When you need your cel to be reliable Verizon is a good company to go with. You pay a little more but you get unlimited, anywhere in the united states, after 9pm and weekends. and unlimited 24/7 to anyone with a verizon phone. Had mine for years and never dropped a call.

not to ridicule anyone but u should go with which ever one is suitable for you, and u should test which one gives u good reception at least at your house. if ur going by stereo-types then these are your choices from the top carriers, VERIZON- best coverage, CINGULAR- best selections of phones, T-MOBILE--cheapest calling plans, best customer service. have fun choosing..

T Mobile is crappy so avoid it.... I would say either Verizon or AT&T....... Verizon has good service, but AT&T has some pretty good plans for a low price....
If you got Verizon, a nice phone to pick up would be the Chocolate....it's got MP3, Nice Camera, Good Design
And if you got AT&T, you could pick up a Motorola, maybe a RAZR or a PEBL..... Nice Designs....

Verizon has been a little expensive on occasion, but it has a great network, THE BEST selection of phones, and loads of options for a plan that fits your lifestyle. I love it and have loved it for the past 6+ years.
