There is no one without marketable skills who is worth more than minimum wage. So, the pay is good for teens who live at home with no more than personal expenditures.

Sit with Mom and explain that you understand that you don't "deserve" money, but you are willing to work for it. You want your own money so you can go to the movies with friends, grab a burger, buy a new outfit, etc. See if she would show you how to set up a good budget, making sure you put a percentage into long-range savings, short range savings and have some pocket money (maybe you know how to do that, but it's always good to ask Mom).

Mom rules, but communication is essential. You explain your side (respectfully) and listen to her side. If she does not bend, she is still Mom. Maybe next summer - who knows?

No offense but I agree with the furniture thing, if she is buying it, you should keep your room clean, i know it is soooo hard though, i didn't master it until high school. A big problem for me was...laundry. as far as the job thing, consider yourself lucky..i know it sounds crazy but...i worked since the age of 12 and i never got a real childhood, don't get a job until your a sophomore or junior because then, you need one to pay for car insurance and gas. you don't agree with me but believe me when you hit seventeen or eighteen it will hit you in the back of the head like a brick...WORKING SUCKS!!! just do some work for your mom around the house or get a allowance also, bargain shop, shop at thrift stores. i found brand new ugg shoes for a $1 at a garage sale. i have money but i still love shopping at stores. or have a garage sale sell some of the things in your room, maybe if you do, you will have less and it will be easier to keep your room clean. in the case of most kids, even myself, i have stuff that's like i don't even think about it like shoes and clothing, i don't waer it...just takes room up........GOODLUCK!!!

i agree with your mom. If you dont take care of the stuff you have why should you be allowed to go get a job just to waste your money things you are eventually going to ruin??? She's got a point.

Your mother should be encouraging you to work!
Not telling you, that you don't deserve too.
What about your dad?
If he's around, ask him to speak to your mom about this.
That's INSANE.
I've never heard of someone's mother telling them that.
