Is a 12 year old old enough to have a cell phone if they ONLY use it to contact their parents if their lost, or something is over early and they need picked up??? Because I'm 12 and I am going to be in sports, babysitting, guitar lessons, and a lot of other things...and I would only use it to contact my parents (or siblings, aunt, uncles, grandparents..ect.) Do you think that would be acceptable??

Yes... My daughter has one and she is 10. There was a time when I thought it was too young for a girl that age to have a cell phone but I ended up loving the idea because I can keep track of her when she is going to different friend's homes in our apartment complex.
I know where she is every minute. It makes me feel more comfortable letting her venture to her friends'.
When she leaves the house and get's to a friends house she calls and says where she is at. And she calls me every 30 minutes. Just a quick call to say she's still there. Then when she is leaving she calls to tell me she is coming home. Then I know she'll be home in a few minutes.
Or she will call to ask if she can go to another friend's house and calls me when she gets there. It works out perfect for me and her. And she thinks it's cool to have a cell phone.. And so do I.

No. 12 year olds should not have a cell phone. If they are in sports, the schools have telephones. I'm 49 and I survived going through sports, etc. without one. At 12, there should always be some sort of adult supervision and they would allow your child to use it. When they start driving is when they should be allowed a cell phone for emergency use only. At 18 they can do what they want for the most part.

Absolutely. I received my first cellphone when I was 12, after my father died, and it was a Motorola StarTac. It wasn't the nicest of phones, but then again, I only needed it for emergencies, and it was very durable. In my 12 year old naivete, I dropped it on a daily basis and it kept on kicking. I do think it is a good idea for a preteen to have a cell phone, I just don't think it should be very expensive. I ALSO advise against enabling TXT messaging, because, as with all teens, that will be abused and lead to superfluous charges.

Verizon has a cell phone for kids and teens, the LG Migo. I think it has some sort of parental control options with it. If you aren't worried about who she is talking to but the amount she is talking, you can always look into prepaid cell phones. That way she can only use the amount of money you put on it at a time.

Yea,I think having a cell phone is important these days.
It's especially important if anything happens to you and you need to call someone for help.
If you are kidnapped (And I hope that never happens) you'll have a phone with you to call for help and even if you can't call they'll be able to track your whereabouts through the cell phone location.
I have a friend who's 9 year old little girl has a cell phone and I think it's a great idea.
In fact when my son starts kindergarten I'm going to give him a phone of his own so we can always be in touch if we need to be.
I will feel safer knowing that he can call me if anything happens and I'll know what to do.
So go ahead and ask for the phone and even volunteer to do chores around the house to help earn it.
Tell your mom you'll make her breakfast every Sunday and that should cheer her up.
Good luck and I'd like to know if you get one so let us know OK?

Yes, my sister is 11 and she has a cell phone. I think my parents feel better that she has it. We always know where she is, but it's still refreshing to know that if there was an emergency, we could reach her.

heck yea you should have a phone like that. i know they have a couple like that. disney and ? can't recall the other.
i think your parents can restrict the #s you can call on other carriers. i would call some stores for att verizon sprint etc and see what they can do for you.
i think your parents should be appreciative of your maturity about getting a phone. i'm sure you have tons of friends that age that just callllll and textttt the heck out of their plans and don't use them responsibly.
kudos to you

Well, it all depends on what kind of plan you're going to get and how responsible you will be with it. I would suggest waiting till you're at least 16 - you can get in on your sixteenth B-day maybe.
I answered a question like this yesterday, check it out:

I would wait until you are in highschool to get a phone. Plus the longer you wait the nice phone you are going to have than others.
