First wash the bin really well inside and out. Then I use Febreze on mine. Spray it inside and out and then once in a while between washings. That works for me.

I'm not a big fan of sprays and don't think baking soda works very well - here's an inexpensive and fragrance free solution that is perfect for your problem. - I know many other people that use it. It is a natural fragrance free carbon product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great and eliminates the odors and for a long time.. Just hang or clip a couple of these to trash can. No spills or chemicals or powder to worry about. Each only costs a couple of dollars. I use this product everywhere including car(smoke and pet smells), storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it and Internet at customerservice@innofresh.com.
Definitely worth trying

Take a scrub brush and go at it using some type of cleanser. Hose it out to rinse and see if there is any smell left. If you still smell a faint odor, then use some spray like Oust or another brand to get rid of the odor.
Also try scrubing out the stainless steel can too. Do it all at once and be done with it.
good luck.

First clean the lining of your garbage can you may have had a spill and it's starting to stink... Also, use smaller garbage bags if you can.. If you are only taking care of you the garbage is sitting too long and getting stinky.. Take it out more often... There's a product called ZORBEX available at LOWE's/Walgreens... It really works, just spray the can and the smell will disappear... I would do that if you were having company.... You can also get an air fresher/ or baking soda stick on freshner to absorb odors...Good luck

i have a small ohana on maui, where it's also hot and humid year round, so i deal with the same problem. my solution has been to add a 'food' trash. a small kind that i can use one or two grocery store plastic bags in. i keep it right in front of my real trash bin. ALL food goes in there, including some small trash with food on it (i.e. ziploc bags, meat packaging, etc) and that gets emptied every other day. that prevents my real trash from stinking, and i don't have to waste big trash bags because someone throws in old pork :-(
it's worked wonderfully. Good luck!

First, use plastic bags and emtpy often. You can even buy odor reducing plastic bags. Secondly, once ever week or two on a sunny day, soak apparatus (in my case, plastic tall trash can with a mixture of clorox and water. Do this outside to use sun's germ killing power. These activities will help quite a bit..

Apart from cleaning it with a disenfectant, and using trash bin liners, you can put about a cup of BAKING SODA either loose, or in one of those ventilated refrigerator boxes of baking soda you can get in the store... I'd put that in the bottom of the trash can before you put the liner bag in.
I agree that a "stick up" is also a good thing.

Personally, I would throw out the bin, and use disposable plastic bags instead, but not left at ground level, - hang one on a hook on a wall. This deters insects.

Baking Soda is the natural answer to supress scents, but you could also try bleach, febreze, or maybe mothballs.
