It is someone who understands and respects the game for what it is, and doesn't try to make it what they want it to be. It is someone who supports their favorite team, and players, and has respect for the other teams that are doing everything they can to win as well. It is one who continues to improve their knowledge of the game and comes to realize the finer points of the game and the unbelievable talent of those that play it. It is a person that is not to critical of those that play the game, and leaves that for others not as informed and one that will pass on knowledge to others which will, hopefully, bring joy into their lives as well.

Well that may be 2 questions in one. You may be a fan of baseball but not really have a favorite team. You just want to see a good close game where everybody go all out and give 100%. Fans of the game respect all teams and players because they just love the game.
Then we have fans of a team who are usually also fans of the game. To me a great fan not only cheers for their team but has respect for the game. They don't need to go to many games because maybe they can't afford it. But they should follow them closely on TV, the radio, or at least in the newspaper. You should be able to ask a fan at any time where there team is and they should be able to tell you pretty accurately.
One more point - fans of the game also help others understand the game better so it's more enjoyable.

A great fan of baseball is not someone who supports their team through thick or thin. That is a great fan of that particular team. A great fan of baseball is someone who knows and appreciates the history of the game. A great baseball fan can identify and appreciate great teams whether they are fans of that team or not. A great baseball fan will watch whatever game happens to be on the tube at the time. A great fan will be knowledgeable in the strategy of the game and understand the whys and whats of the decisions made on the field. A great baseball fan will be able to tell you where they were when a significant feat was achieved (I was coaching a 14 Yo Travel Team in a tourney in Cedar Rapids, Iowa when Cal Ripken broke Lou Gehrig's record). A great fan will be able to rattle off the lineup for the Big Red Machine or the great Boston teams of the 70s or the great Athletics teams of the early 70s. A great fan will know some statistics of most of the great players in the history of the game.

That is hard to say. I think if you can get through sitting with someone at a game, and be entertaining, or watching a game at a bar and taking what is going on seriously, you are better than average. Some people that go to a lot of games are not great fans because all they do is drink and act obnxiously. All fans should pick a team they like, root hard for them, make an effort if they can to see them play- yes, this is hard in some parts of the country.

A great fan is one who sticks with his team through the good times and the bad. A good fan is one who always cheers for his team, even when out of town in an unfriendly destination. A good fan is one who goes to games sometimes (doesn't have to be all the time). A good fan knows all the players on the team and some basic stats and history too. A good fan will say they love their team, even when they are losing to the KC Royals 10-0 (*ahem* my Texas Rangers).

A great fan supports their team no matter what if they are in a HUGE slump they don't put their teams clothes in their closet. They still wear it with their head up knowing that thier team is the best. They are constantly on the computer or watching espn to see if anything new has happened to their team I can't do that though because espn never talks about the Angels lol. You also feel the pain you team feels when they lose or feel like a champion when they win. You feel like your team is your family and you will be there for them like they will be there for you.And if your i dont know alot of games behind for first place you still have faith in your team because you know in th end they will pull through.

A 'great' baseball fan, to me, is the one who is keen on watching the game, even when the players are training.
A 'great' baseball fan is the one who supports a certain team, but respects and appreciates any other team when they do well.

I'm a great fan. I loved the Red Sox my entire life. I'm 35 years old. I supported them through the good, the bad, and the ugly. Living in Connecticut, I'm on the frontlines, constantly deflecting hatred away from arrogant Yankee fans season after season.
I never miss a game on TV, buy select merchandise and Red Sox apparral, and I know the history of the team just as well as my own life. I'm passionate. I can't sleep when they lose. I just love the team...
