there are 5 settings no noise on 1 or 2, but from 3,4,5 the noise gradually is louder. Do you know what this is and could it be fixed without taking to the shop?

I had this same problem. It is caused by the fan. I searched around the fan and found no obstructions so I lubricated it and the problem went away. I used a light coat of WD-40. The problem came back in 3 months. It is a quick fix, but not a permanent one.

Does air even move on 1 or 2, and do you hear it running? I'd be willing to bet you have leaves or something that has gone down the vent and is touching the blower. You will have to clear it out.

Bad blower motor bearings.
Buy a new blower motor ($45.00)
