Why do Americans persist with the myth that they somehow "won" the war and saved everyone? For this the whole world has to cow-tow to them fot the rest of eternity? Firstly it is baed on gross historical inaccuracy and secondly it was a long time ago! I notice that every time someone criticises American policy they churn out the rather loquacious retort "we saved you asses in two wars..." yawn....

Winston Churchill admited that with out the involvement of America we could not have held off the German advance indefinitely. This coming from our Prime Minister at the time, and I for one believe him !! :)

The answer to this question is rather simple. American are by nature rather nostalgic. We like to look at our historical past with, in some cases, reverent owe. The American Civil War as viewed from the Southern perspective for example. The gallantry and honor of the" Lost cause". The same can be said of WW2. It was the last "Good War" if there is such a thing. The United States stepped in just when Europe and England were on the ropes with Germany, just as we had done in WW1. The fact that Germany was the obvious aggressor and exterminating the Jews wholesale were reason enough to label the Germans as evil, painted with a broad brush. And something you might not have taken into consideration, The millions of service men and women still alive, who fought in that war. Their shared experience and their influence on society as mentors and teachers of their children help to shape America's understanding of its place in the world since 1945.

If America hadn't have entered the War when they did there is no way we would have won. I don't think that we would have lost, but there would have been some sort of peace deal. I also believe that the Americans could have easily come into the War on the side of the Germans, especially if Germany had invaded the Soviet Union first.

Because they engage mouth before brain most of them know nothing of what is outside their own country either Geographically or Historically.Even Bush in his early speeches seemed unaware of the fact that they had allies in the war with Iraq and he definitely wouldn't have had a clue where it was until one of his aides went to a library and found it in an atlas.

Did America save anybody? Winning WWI but loosing during the peace talks was one of the reasons for WWII. Wilson didn't get a fair peace treaty. And America didn't do much to prevent WWII. One could say that Germany and Austria winning WWI would have saved 20 million (or more) lives twenty years later. And Germany and Austria were monarchies, not totally repressive regimes like Nazi-Gerany.
Put the blame on America. That's the best way to deal with a "we saved you" attitude. Saving some one from drowning after dumping him in the ocean the first place isn't heroic.

What "myth" did your forefather's fight to proclaim? What "gross historical inaccuracy" are you even capable of defending? Loquacious?
Please go back and read a little bit of world history and then back up your unbelievably naive understanding about the history of your country.
Unless you understand what the men and women of the war went through to help stop a despot and his misguided "world powers" from accomplishing and the unbelievable devastation reeked upon almost every area of this planet then you should be denied a graduate degree from even high school.

Because it`s true - they did (in Hollywood at least LOL).
You have to realise your average American is stupid and will believe what they see on screen and in every war film made the Yanks won everything.
THEY captured the Enigma machine (WRONG !!)
THEY were alone on D-DAY (WRONG !!)
You ask any American to name a famous bridge from WW2 where a battle took place - they`ll give you Remagen or Nijmegen NOT Pegasus or Arnhem.I`ll admit capturing Remagen was important to the invasion of Germany BUT without Pegasus on D-Day (captured intact by British Paras) the Germans would have stalled everyone. The Yanks would be still milling around on the WRONG beach (Utah) orpinned down under heavy fire (Omaha) had the British and Commonwealth troops not stormed ashore on their three. So much for American superiority.
The ONLY Hollywood warfilm I`ve seen that depicts WW2 correctly was "The Longest Day" even if it mixed up a few characters for effect - my fave quote from it (on "Utah" beach)
"There`s only two types of people staying on this beach ,those that`re dead and those that`re gonna die .."
TO AMERICA :-
The ONLY war you won was one where you were fighting yourselves !!!!If you mention The War of Independance - you were British citizens for the most part and can`t really count that as you had help from France who WE were also fighting in Europe.
As for the earlier post re Audie Murphy ,he personally killed 240 enemy soldiers and up until the end of WW2 (and for some time after) was THE most heavily decorated US soldier ever and this was all BEFORE he was 19 and BEFORE he was an actor in Hollywood. This was also AFTER he was rejected by the US Navy and Marine Corps - I bet they kicked themselves in 1945 LOL .

I love the bit in I think it was the Stargate film (it might have been one of the episodes of SG1) where an alien asks the president of the US if he was in charge of Earth. He said 'er..yes'.

That's how far Americans are up their own backsides.

If that ever happened for real, the aliens would think 'well these guys are a bunch of brainless fools with no sense of humour' and blow up the whole planet because they'll think it's all run by the US.

Yeh did'nt they just, remember Errol Flynn in "Operation Burma"
yes, I know about his Antipodean birthplace. He was to all intents purpose though a yank through and through. That film had to be taken off cinema circuits in Gt Britain when it was first shown, the yanks were never in Burma, Ha Ha.I worked some years ago, with a chap that was in a BEF in Telemark Norway during WW11, he went back from his leave late, and could have been shot for that. Anyway he met some yanks on a boat when he was coming back from Norway, and he told me that they all had chestfuls of medals he asked one about a particular medal and was told that the yank received it for crossing the Atlantic. Does'nt it just make you laugh
this chap said to me they would get a medal for having a good s**t
Makes Audie Murphy look a bit sick in case anybody does'nt know he is supposed to be the most highly decorated man(although an actor) in America. Anyway A lot of them were to busy for fighting,
tey were too busy knocking the women off while their hubbies were away at the front. A bit like they stopped the spread of communism in Vietnam, when a majority of them came back dopeheads.

They are lied to every day in many ways. They are brainwashed to believe the lies. They are mindless sheep, repeating the lies just as they were taught to repeat lies in Sunday School for gold stars.

We Americans have won some wars and as in the case of Vietnam, we have "agreed to disagree"--no one won!!! I do not know what war you are referring to!!!
I, for one, do not go around bragging about the wars my country won before I was even born.
Americans are free--free to become whatever we want in life.
There are many cultures here. And everyone is free.
We are not the idiots portrayed on television!!!
We love our families, most of us love God or some other Creator, and we love our country!!!
May God bless you.
