Mermaids are real, of course. They're just very rare because of their mating practices. See, they mate with the mermen in the open sea, where they drop their eggs onto the ocean floor and the merman fertilizes them. Then if an egg doesn't get eaten by crabs and flounders and finally hatches, the new little mermaid has to swim on her own to the surface for her first breath of air, and her mother has to just happen to find her so that she can breast feed. This happens so rarely that there just aren't very many mermaids, and they can't be proven to exist.

They have yet to be proven scientifically, although belief in mermaids go back quite far. Check out the source link for a history of mermaids and mermaid sightings.

Mermaids are real however they are very elusive creatures, when I was a little girl in HO, I saw one and many have seen mermaids its just that they appear to the innocent. They cannot be proved unless if you witness them yourself and see with a child's eyes, I am not saying that they are a figment of our imagination but it seems that they choose to reveal themselves to those who do not question. Many in society have illustrated mermaids as half human half fish, well on the human part it has some fine transparent scales all over, oh by the way mermaids mate for life.
Have a good one

No, of course they aren't real. They're a fairy tale like goblins and dragons. How could a creature be half human, half fish? There are creatures called dugongs that sailors in old times thought could be mermaids. Look up a picture of one to see why.

Is the lochness monster real?

You have to think you truly saw them to believe so.

But I just wondered...

If scientists need to have PROOF, hard cold, proof that anything along the lines of mermaids are real, then 1 question.

I want to know how many scientists are catholic or christian or any other religion that THEY can prove by NOT JUST BELIEVING. So I believe in God & NOT believing in anything with just as little proof would be insane.

Well, no not real. No evidence at all that they exist or ever existed.

Stories perhaps came from sailors who had been at sea for a long time, or were drunk, and observed manatees in shallow water with seaweed draped over their head.
