You are not scaring a part of yourself away -- It is called emotional suppression. Finding a place in the brain to store the traumatic experience so you do not have to look at it or think about it or reexperience the trauma of it. I did that and hid a heinous experience for over 30 years. But I will tell you -- you cannot keep it hidden forever. Drat! Go and face that demon!
Yes. We give too much power away. Once you give your power away you can do nothing to retrieve it if the person to whom you gave it knows how the truly wield it. You can scream and cry and rant and rave, but you are just plain screwed. In the words of one of my not so great teachers who had this one moment of true brilliance: Never give your power away.

We give our power away in a million different ways, big and small. Every time we get angry, offended, or hurt, we give some away, and it can become a pattern of behavior. It doesn't necessarily take a traumatic event. Everything is external locus of control. (We are guided and react to the external, primarily.) Soul retrieval is a way of bringing back internal locus of control, with the goal of getting back that power that was lost. One becomes comfortable standing in their power. (Look at babies..the have no issues with standing in their own power. They'll cry, fuss, scream to get their need fulfilled. They don't doubt, second guess themselves, or worry about perceptions.)

Here is a link of a way of reclaiming our power. Transactional analysis: This bloke has a PhD in reclaiming emotional energy, it consists of three very in depth books which explains why people give away their power. Read this and you will become more enlightened on the uses of fear, seduction and the uses of guilt. I hope I'm barking up the right tree.

As human beings we are important part of the energy system. We use and give away rough energy transformed into motion (for example hitting a ball), astral- and kinetic energy, and of course heat. However this is far more beyond our understanding to understand the process completely, we are simply energy transmitters. We transform and transport energy from on form to another and we use it to survive in the process.
Emotions in themselves do not transfer energy to the environment we live in, but they control how much energy we use and transfer and how we do this.
Emotions are electric impulses in your brain created by the brain itself. Happiness or sadness is caused by certain circumstances in life, which leads to emotion in your brain. When this happens the brain instructs various cells in the body to produce a series of proteins and enzymes that interact with the skin, the nervous system, and the brain, thus making you capable of feeling the emotion.
You feel emotions because you must be motivated somehow by the non-emotional part of your brain. When you have friends (allies), new mobile (technology that helps to survive), a membership in a local group (safe place in community),, etc. you feel happiness. It is a pleasurable feeling because your brain wants to maintain the conditions that caused the emotion in order to ensure your survival (survival potential percentage).
When you feel sadness, you have lost an ally, an opportunity or anything that helped your survival in any ways. Pain motivates you to move on, act, and change the current situation. Once you achieved sg. good. you feel happiness again... in order to maintain these conditions.
We also loose astral energy when psy-vampire attacks us.
There are people among us with extraordinary mental abilities. Psyhic vampires drain the lifeforce from humans through an astral connection. They tap onto our aura and suck life-force. So they are energy feeders. They rarely drink blood, since the blood carries various illnesses (e.g. AIDS) and it is a natural emetic. They drink blood for spiritual purposes.
Vampirism is the taking of the lifeforce of the human to empower the Vampire. In its essence, Vampirism is merely a more refined form of eating.
The Vampire absorbs the lifeforce from the human. The human absorbs it from other animals and plants. The plants take it from the sun. The sun, too, is not the final source. However, the chemical breakdown of nutrients and its places in the biochemical cycle (the Krebs Cycle) that transfers energy is not the complete story.
Just as modern physicists are finally aware of the fact that much of the mass of the universe is "missing", biochemists remain unaware of the role of a "missing" element in the energy system of the human body. This missing element is the so-called astral universe which includes the astral bodies of all living things.
At the heart of eating is the concept of astral energy transfer. The actual transfer usually requires a discoincidence of the astral body from the physical which, in turn, usually entails a loss of consciousness. Hence after a large meal, most humans and animals will become sleepy because it is when they sleep that the true energy transfer occurs.
Another example of the role of sleep is energy absorption can be seen in those cases of extreme danger to physical survival. If a human is crossing a desert and dying of thirst, he may slump down to unconsciousness and sleep.
When he reawakens, his energy level is renewed and he can continue the struggle. This happens because during unconsciousness his astral body separated to some extent from the physical body in order to permit the flow of stored energy into the various tissues of body and brain.
The most refined source of the lifeforce energy for Living Vampires is thus found in the astral bodies of humans while the humans are sleeping or in some other way not normally conscious. Vampires often travel to the sides of sleeping
humans to draw off the accumulated store of their life energy from the drowsing astral form which rests near.
To achieve this higher level of Vampirism requires the Vampire to be able to rise from his physical body in the astral with sufficient awareness and intention.
Most people attacked by psy-vampires will become vampires themselves, because they wish to revive the energy the vampire drained from them.
Energies leave our bodies and return in many ways. If you are ill or depressed, or simply in a bad condition, your energy level is low, which means you use less energy and give away more without transforming it.

i think other people can drain your energy with negative attitudes but then a positive person can give it back - if you stay positive and laugh at life you don't lose the energy
