Each league sends four teams to the postseason -- the three division champions, and one wildcard team, which berth is assigned to the second-place team with the best record. So, eight total teams.

The division champions are seeded 1-2-3 based upon complete seasonal record (tiebreakers exist if necessary). The wildcard is seeded #4 regardless of record.

Teams are paired, within their own league, as such: #1 plays #4 and #2 plays #3 UNLESS the wildcard is from the same division as the #1 seed. In that case, the pairings are 1-3 and 2-4.

Higher seed gets homefield (Game 1) in the Division Series and League Championship Series (so, the wildcard never gets HFA). The Division Series format is 2-2-1 (3 of 5); the LCS, 2-3-2 (4 of 7).

League champions meet in the World Series (2-3-2), where homefield was determined earlier by the outcome of the All-Star Game.

The winner of the WS is the champion team for that season.

There are 8 team. 6 are division winners, and 2 are wild-card division winners (a team from the two leagues, National and American, with the best records and not division winners). The team with the overall best record will play the team that is the wild-card, and the other two teams play as well. Homefield advantage is decided by record as well, so wild-card teams will never have homefield advantage in the first round.

they seed just like every other playoff way since the start of time, usually seed no.1 faces no.8, so on and forward. i believe that with each racket of teams only 3 get to make it 1st and 2nd usually shoe in and then a wild card.
