NO he wasnt racist. After he retired, the Babe Ruth Allstars played games with the Satchell Paige Allstare, years before baseball as a whole was integrated. In that first game Ruth hit Paige for a homerun. Paige met him at the plate for congratulations and the game was stopped for 15 min. while the two men enjoyed each others company and conversation.

Interesting during the early part of his career it was often spectulated that Ruth was of mixed race descent because of his wide nose and full lips. A disparaging nickname was given to him as a result of these features

I've read a couple of biographies of Ruth, and I've never heard of that.

It's kind of an interesting question, in that he grew up in Baltimore, in a border state, and I would think that racism was very much a part of the surroundings of his time. Of course, he grew up relatively poor and wild, stuck in a school for troubled boys. I would guess that he didn't care who his friends were as long as they were willing to eat, drink and be merry. And has been pointed out, Ruth did barnstorm with African Americans.

Now, Ty Cobb once went into the stands to beat up a guy who didn't have any hands (birth defect, I think), because the fan had called him the N-word. It's fair to say Ty had some issues, as you might expect for some of that time period from Georgia.

First, with all due respect, I think the question is kind of irrelevant, in that while he never played with black players, nor did he seem to really care, I don't think it impacted how Babe Ruth behaved or played. (Ty Cobb may be a different story, but that's not the question). Second, and more importantly, Ruth grew up in a Baltimore orphanage with many underpriviledged children, a few of them assuredly black or Hispanic. While you cetrtainly don't see Ruth going out of his way to be with black or Hispanic fans, I think in his heart he would have understood their struggle and been a good teammate had he the chance.

After the Babe was struck out by Satchel Paige once he asked the Yankees to sign him. I don't know if that proves he wasn't a racist but it provides circumstantial evidence that he was not.
