if you always have this problem, it might not be a bad idea to go to your gyno and get checked out. maybe think about getting put on birth control? it can shorten your period and lighten the flow.

if its only a one time thing, stress could be playing a factor in it.

Well, are you using the right size for the amount of flow? If you have a heavy period, I'd use the super or plus. As your period stops, use lighter ones until your period's over. You can always see a doctor. There's no harm in doing that too.

What day are your on? (Generally it is heavier the first 2-3 days and then gets lighter.)
Is it heavier than normal? (Sometimes it will be heavier, but if it keeps up, you should talk to your doctor)
You could try using a super-plus absorbancy.

If your flow remains heavy and/or painful... or if it's always like this... see a gyno ASAP. Some women have heavy flows to begin with, but if it's bothersome and painful you might have a problem. It's worth checking out just to be safe.

Nah sometimes you just have a heavy flow. It should slow in a day or so.
