I think it's by Strauss or Stravinsky, but I'm not sure. I also think it's an opera. The part I'm thinking of is pretty famous, in a lot of commercials and stuff. It goes like this...

C C C Bb C

Each note gets the same amount of time (i.e. all are 8th notes)
The first note comes in on 1 and (i.e. 1 and 2 and, as in counting the beats in a piece)

Try adding a low C on the down beats. The other note's I've given are up higher. In the song, this part is played by a violin. There is singing in it, but not at this particular part in the song.

I can name that tune in 5 notes, Bob!

Actually, I can't -- can you give us a little more?

Right now it sounds like Respighi, from the "Pines of Rome",
but that little snipet could be many things....

If it's a Dd, then that is from the overture to "The Barber of Seville" by Rossini.

well is it Johann Strauss or Richard Strauss? More likely Johann? Then his most famous is Die Fledermaus (sorry, can't tell you from 5 notes)- Richard Strauss wrote a lot of opera- most famous probably Der Rosenkavalier... Stravinsky really wrote only one opera thats performed a lot- The Rake's Progress, but the music isn't very famous.

could you tell us more? Is there singing? In what language?

Sounds actually a bit like Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King. But which octaves?
