I have a Yamaha 125cc Vino Scooter. I just brought it in for the 600 mile service check and they soaked me almost 200 dollars. They say they did a oil change, changed the filter, did some adjusting and lube. My question is each year should I change the oil and filter myself or should I bring it in for the full check up ?

I have a service manul that came with the scooter. But I never have time to work on it except maybe changing the oil and filter. Relax1 you did'nt really answer my question. Is it very important to spend all that money for the check up when I can change the oil and filter myself ? Thats what I need to know.

Rand C you also missed the point of my question. I don't have the time to work on my scooter other than the oil and filter change. Is the full check up the shop does worth me spending the $200 dollars If don't have the time to do it myshelf.

save yourself some cash and get a service manual on the scoot. it will give you the info you need to maintain your bike. remember though , if you are not mechanically inclined or are not sure what you are doing , you may get in over your head, resulting in a parked scoot.

I've owned 26 bikes now, the last 5 all harleys. I've done my own scheduled maintenance for years. You have the first step, a good service manual. Just follow the step by step directions, keep your receipts for oil, filter spark plugs etc. Date it and include it in the back page of your service manual. If there are parts of the service you can't or don't feel comfy doing, let the service department do that one item. It saves you a ton of money, let's you maintain and learn your bike inside and out. I just did the 1000 mile service on my newest Harley. If the dealership did it, it runs $350.00, I paid for the motor oil and filter, the tranny and primary fluid and spent less that $60.00 and had an enjoyable afternoon servicing my bike. About the only thing I won't do on a bike (especially a bike ridden at highway speeds) is adjust the steering head bearings, and that is because many years ago, I rode a used bike that belonged to a guy who tried to adjust them himself. At 65mph it went into a high speed wobble and I darn near died. So, that is one thing I always let the dealer do. Don't wait and change the oil and filter yearly, follow the guidelines in your manual and change it as directed. But heck yes, do it yourself, it's easy and enjoyable.
