Well, almost immediately you possibly broke a federal law, depending on your area and the type of fish. Let your mom know that in most places it's illegal to release non-native species into a body of water.
Also let her know that telling her child an animal is disposable is not a good lesson to be teaching you.

Several thing could happen. IF they could aclimate to the colder temperature of the area you live in they over came the first problem. Then they need to learn where the safe areas are for them so they do not get eaten, like shallow and thick water plants. Food would be the next problem but I don't think a very big one because fish can survive on a wide variety of things. Of course, unless they all stayed together they would never find another of their type to have babies with.
But to be more realistic, even if they overcame those things, come winter the water would be much colder than they could learn to deal with in a short time. I hate to tell you this but I think they were happy for a short time in what seemed to them as the 'great wilderness' outside the tank before quickly and painlessly being eaten by a larger native fish.
There are a few type that would be OK, but that also would depend on where you lived. Remember most of these fish come from more tropical climates.
What is the deal with the dog? Fish and dogs are fine together. What was your Mom thinking? Also, Mom should have taken them back to the fish store. The store would have found them new happy homes.

If it was an exotic fish or a fish that's not found around your area, then it could of done some damage to the ecosystem.

Oh, I think he's fine. There's probably food out there. I'm sorry it happened, but that's the way life goes at times.

i think a goldfish would get eaten or die of cold or starvation. a domesticated animal cannot look after itself in the wild, either way your fish are now dead...... sorry
