I have a motherboard with 2 733 Mhz processors. Does that mean that my computer has 1.46 Ghz of processing power (ie enough for vista) or does it mean that my computer still only has 733mhx of processing power.

As i said i was wondering if it's enough for vista so it overall thats what im wondering.

Thanks

You have a dual socket motherboard.

Unless you have software that is compiled to utilize the two cores then it is of no use.

XP doesn't properly utilize the two cores, however, it does allow access to them so long as the programs being used have been coded for MP(multi-processor) setups.

Typically this would include video encoders, photoshop, etc.

Your next question. Being that they are 733Mhz, you most likely have older CPU architectures and it's safe to say that VISTA will run quite miserably.

However, I could be wrong and you used a utility such as CPU-Z to find out your current processor speeds. If that is the case, Intel speedstep technology or powernow by AMD could have ramped down processor speed in an effort to save power and heat dissipation. If this is the case, you're configuration may not be as old as first thought and there's a slim chance you could run Vista without too many problems so long as it's day to day tasks such as emailing or web browsing.

However, majority of performance issues is delegated to memory performance. The sweet spot is considered 2GB of RAM to run to Vista efficiently.

First question, yes it is equal to that total amount of processing. The system will use processor 0 till it is 100% active, then start processing with the second.

Second question, absolutely not. Judging from the processors installed I'm guessing you probably only have at most 1GB of ram. Even if Vista does complete the installation you will have issues with older hardware support. With the older system you will really get more reliable and more stable performance out of XP, or Windows 2000/2003

Well it means that its 2*733 but still, it depends on the OS and the way it is used...

This is a test to see how much it is usually used, and there should be tools to see the percentant of cpu used for 2 cores (I think it works too (had to run a heavy application in background though))

As for vista I have a core2 duo with double power than yours and is barely holding them

2 proccessors are made to run multiple applications... That means that using both 2 proccessors for one application, doesnt give the best result and the performance is limited... Vista is better for 2 proccessors but is for better systems to have good performance

No you have two processors each running at 733Mhz, you can't just add them up. That is a bit too low to run Vista, the minimum is 800Mhz.

By the way, I am going to check back and if Xboxman33 (you) has copied someone elses answer and been selected best as has happened on all your other questions, I will be reporting you for points gaming.
