I would say that the essence of sanity is the ability to know for sure that there are problems in the world, but still being able to see the good in the world. Yep, really cheesy, but its something that works for me, and maybe it will help you find your own definition.

The essence of sanity is knowing the difference between right and wrong.
If you cannot tell the difference your actions will reflect that and you will be irrational and considered insane.

Having had clinical insanity more times then I would like to remember.I don't know if I qualify to answer, but
The trip to sanity is in small things and lessening the big ones,
A little flight might be OK, if you have a stash of tranquilizer, around.
