Oh my gosh, you are getting the gambit here. 7 days? 10 days? Don't think so.
Here's the deal. Normally, the vagina is a very hostile environment for sperm. The environment in there is designed to fight off bacteria, so normally sperm is seen as an invader. Under these conditions, the sperm only survives a couple of days (that's if your partner has good quality sperm to fight that long).
Now. when a woman becomes fertile, the environment inside the vagina CHANGES. Pay attention everyone, this is the important part. When women become fertile, her cervical mucous changes consistency to become thin and stretchy. This cervical mucous provides an environment for sperm to thrive. Not only does fertile mucous allow sperm to survive longer, but swim faster. Under this sperm-friendly environment, sperm have been known to last up to 5 days. However, most sperm still don't last that long, more like 3 or 4. You also have to remember that just because sperm CAN last that long, they are not as healthy as fresher sperm. Making the journey to the egg is only HALF the battle for these soldiers. Then sperm has to be able to penetrate the egg's protective coating in order to fertilize it. A sperm that's been alive 5 days may not be strong enough to do the job, whereas a sperm that's only been alive for 24 hours can do it much easier.
So, you always want to have as much fresh sperm in the sperm pool as possible. Hope this helps.
Good luck.

While it may stay alive for up to 5 days, it's potency is greatly diminished (thus reducing your chances for pregnancy) after 48 hours. If you are trying to conceive and time it right when your ovulating, you should look to have intercourse every OTHER day.
This way it gives your partner time to "replenish" [if you know what I mean ;-)] and will allow the sperm presently in your body to do their thing. After the 48 hours have passed, your parnter will be recharged and a new batch can come in and make a run at it.
Good luck!

Sperm can live in a woman's body for up to six days — possibly seven. And, as long as the semen is still wet, the sperm can survive outside the body. If the semen has dried, been wiped off, or washed off, there are no longer any living sperm.

You can usually still find viable sperm up to 72 hours after intercourse.
Of course, this depends on the "health" for lack of better words, of the sperm itself, and the pH inside of the woman.

in healthy fertile cervical mucus 3-5 days
it does not die when it hits the air because some people get pregnant through IUI, or IVF, or other such methods in which the sperm goes in the cup first... then is delivered to the drs office within 45 minutes to an hour

they are strong little critters, I could not say medically how long "outside" the box they stay fresh, but I do know when I got ready to have a baby my doctor said I would have a hard time (?), after sex he told me not to get up for about 10 minutes, lay with butt and leggs elevated(pillows underneath) I proped my leggs up on the headboard and I was preggers in no time at all...good luck to you!
