Something you can actually grab? Well, a professional sports team is very expensive - hundreds of millions of dollars in many cases.
A business would be even more expensive - you could buy all the shares in a company like Microsoft. Their current market capitalization is $275 Billion, so I would say that is the most expensive thing you can buy.

You could try to buy the crude oil reserves of a country. I think the value of Iraq's reserves have been estimated at $2 Trillion (with a T).

Per capita and speaking to scale,I would say that Yacht's are the most expensive...
Also military aircraft.
But if you want some extravagant items.
Diamonds
Original works of da vinci
art(all sorts)
Divorce(takes half of your worth in a single fell swoop)
I think there are some islands in the pacific that are for sale.
plutonium
a ride on the space shuttle
Running a presidential campaign.
Gambling
If you are looking for a single item that might be the most expensive,,,,I would say, probably the hope diamond.

The most expensive thing in the world would be purchasing the entire world and turning it into "Your World." Ha ha. I bet someone 100 times as rich as Bill Gates could go purchase America or something.
