Do you think the U.S. was right in dropping the Atomic Bomb on Japan in WW2?

20/20 hindsight being what it is, I think it would have been better not to nuke Japan.

Few know it, but Japan actually wanted to negotiate a peace with us. They knew they had lost the war, they just didn't want to "unconditionally surrender," simply because that is essentially being conquered. Major cities like Tokyo had already been destroyed by firing bombing.

The US could have negotiated a peaceful end to the war without even without nuking Japan.

After the bombs were dropped, Japan surrendered days later.

So yes, the US was right.

While people may blame the US for killing innocent Japanese, the fact that the Japanese bombed Pearl and drew America into the war seems to escape their mental grasp.

definitely. there would have been a lot more dead American soldiers if the US had tried to actually invade japan. The cities targeted, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, were not targeted because we tried to kill people but they were selected because they were more munitions towns and war factories. The casualties on both sides would have been greater if the atomic bombs were not dropped. There would have probably been more innocent casualties if the US invaded and conventionally bombed the nation.

Yes I do...

We gave them ample warning...dropped about a zillion fliers from the air warning those people to get out of the area....

We ended what would have been a years long, island-hopping Pacific war in a few short days.....

Many, many lives were spared on both sides as a result..and while what happened to those people is tragic ....Try to imagine what would have happened if we had to hit the beaches on Japan and march into Tokyo..fighting the whole way....

Yes. Sometimes to get things done and prevent loss of more of your own people, something drastic has to be done, even if it sacrifices some innocent people (sadly).
