People give you stars if they like your question. It may not give you any points but it is good to know that someone thinks your question is interesting.

It lets people know that you found the question interesting.
Also, anyone in your contacts or fans then can see the question as well.
And if you receive a lot of them, you could possibly end up on the popular question page.
I don't know how many that would take.
