It was this way untill westerners changed it.
I would like to learn the old astrology. I think it would be much more acurrate. Things seam to get plagued with a bunch of crap once thay hit the west. I want to get back to basics. I believe ancient societies knew much more about are heavens than do modern day people. What do you think?

Today most people at least know there sun sign. In the old times people knew there moon signs if nothing else. When someone said whats your sign they would give there moon sign.

I agree with FR, the early calenders were moon based, thus the emphasis on this celestial body.

I am a student of old line astrology, cutting my teeth on the works of Ivy Goldstein Jacobson, Stephen Arroyo, Dane Rudhyar, Noel Tyl, etc.

I do want to introduce one point, however, we are different people than we were in ancient times. According to the esoteric material, ancient man was ruled by his emotional body, modern man has progressed to be ruled by his mental body.

Considering that mankind, as a whole, has evolved, then I would also consider it appropriate that the sun and rising signs would be relevant to us for our time period.

Well, I am not really a fan of so-called esoteric thought.

I think that nowadays, in the West, we live in an atomised, go-getting society where work, achievement and opportunity take precedence over more community-minded values. In this context, most people would need to develop their solar qualities and that of their ascendants in order to survive and compete. Glorious achievement and conquering from one perspective, dog-eat-dog competitiveness on the other.

A point made in the recent publication of 'Pulling down the Moon,' however, is that there might once have been more matrifocal societies, not necessarily more unevolved than ours, where the moon may indeed have been the more powerful luminary.

In my experience it is less common for people to typify their moon signs more than their sun signs and anyway, subjective perceptions either way may not be shared by those who really know us, but I am maybe less inclined than most to evangelise about affirmng sun signs at the expense of the moon sign. We may well be more in touch with one than the other, but then there are writers who understand midpoints who might tell us how powerful and integrative the sun-moon midpoint is.

This is not completely true. The lunar calendar was used because it was easier for the ancients to follow. It also had 13 lunar months. The ancients didn't know more than we do but what they knew they passed down over the centuries. At the time of Julius Caesar, the calendar was changed to a solar calendar and has remained so. It was easier to follow and more efficient. Just because it came from the west doesn't necessarily make it crap.

Most early calendars were moon based. Even Islam still uses a moon based calendar. I assume it came from those matriarchal beliefs that worshipped the moon as the mother of all, and the sun as her son...

As for astrology, I've heard this before, but to be honest, even if you tell your moon sign when someone asks you for your sign, it's still not enough - it's the combination of all the luminaries and the planets and even the rising which is important.

The moon was possibly just easier to watch than the Sun.
