A friend of mine is claiming shes only 35wks pregnant and that she is going into hospital on mon to be induced because they said her baby is big.Would they do that for this reason. Im asking this as i think she got pregnant before she met her currant partner and is trying to say its his baby when she is further gone than 35 wks, i think she is being taken in to be induced because shes overdue and not because the baby is big.

A Doctor would induce because of size although ive always been led to believe that any Doctor would prefer to wait until a baby is no less than 36 weeks before doing this because of interfering with the little ones lung maturity. Im sure they'd rather her either wait a week , and if they insisted baby was too, too, big by then do a C-Section as anything under 36-37 weeks is classed a a prem. Ive got Gestational diabetes and i know they are going to scan me next week to see if baby is going to be big (im 37 weeks by then though) and they never even mentioned this to me as a possibility at 35 weeks. Im not trying to be judgemental but it sounds a little fishy to me. I guess one way to know for sure is wait and see what the baby weighs. I was told by my consultant last week that an average baby size is classed as 8lbs so she'd have to be over that (or be short and have a small pelvis) for it to be considered big.

At 35 weeks it would be too early to induce unless absolutely necessary because mother and/or baby had serious health problems.

A baby delivered at 35 weeks could have serious breathing problems as the lungs would not be completely developed yet. The poor little thing would end up in NICU! I cannot imagine how a baby of 35 weeks gestation could possibly be "too big".

After 38 weeks a baby is considered full term.

Usually babies induced for being "too big" are either overdue or close to their due dates (my mum was induced a week early with me because I was "too big".)

I'm pretty sure your friend is much further along than 35 weeks!!!

hmm sounds like a tricky situation. A doctor can induce labour if the baby is thought to be a larger weight or if there are any medical problems to either mother or baby. If she's saying its cos the baby is too big, the truth will come out after the baby is born, and they'll know the actual weight.

They could induce if the baby is too big for the mother to carry any longer. If the mother is tiny she might not be able to carry a large baby. However, I know lots of small people with bigger babies, some over 10lbs, that were not induced.

they may induce if its big but i would think that its very unlikely that they would do it at 35 weeks as the babies lungs wouldnt be mature at that point so it would be stupid to put it at risk like that. women have babies as big as 12lb at term and werent induced so unless its already that sort of size then i think she maybe telling porkies. Inducements arent usually done before 38 weeks unless there is a strong medical reason x

Hi! In answer to your question, and in response to the person who said they NEVER induce because of the size, they do indeed induce if they measure the baby with a sonogram and find that due to the size the mother is in danger...I for one am a very petite woman, and when I had my ten pound son, they induced me purely on the fact that if he got any bigger it could have had very bad results for myself, as well as my son. Even with inducing me 3 weeks early, I ended up having a c-section because my son was stuck on my hip bone.

In either case, why not just be there and support your friend? Whether she is lying about when she conceived, or if she is going to have a large baby, if you are truly her friend, support her, as in either case, it's going to be rough on her. It sounds as like you don't trust her, and in that case, you would BOTH be better off not calling each other "friend." If you are, then just be there for her and stop analyzing everything...what would you get out of it anyway, even if she did get pregnant before?

It is unfortunate the she finds herself in this situation. It is also unfortunate that the size of the baby MIGHT really be a reason the dr. is suggesting induction for her. Yes, that could be a reason even though it's common to have a doctor GUESS wrong by up to 2 pounds!!!!
Even if she is really a month more pregnant, that is only 39 weeks and the baby might not be ready to be born. IMHO there are waaaaay too many inductions for wrong reasons in the US.

No, they would not induce due to size unless it was so drastic that it posed a threat to the mother's or baby's health.

In fact, doctors typically do everything they can to keep that baby in there until at least 37/38 weeks because they baby's lungs are the last thing to develop.

I don't know if the conclusion is exactly what you assume, but I do agree that your friend is full of crap.

No doctor will induce a baby for the personal goals of the mother.

They will do it if the baby or the mom is at risk. A doc has to have an excellent reason for induction that early. They would never do it before 38 weeks unless there was an impending danger.

If the baby is big, they want to get it out as soon as possible. Another week could make for a difficult delivery. The baby has to go through the narrowest part of the pelvis - sometimes babies get stuck here by the shoulders. This is a very scary thing and can cause brain damage due to lack of oxygen. This is something people want to avoid as much as possible. And babies do gain a lot of weight in the last trimester.
