Dear Tar Baby-

Here are a couple of things to try, before you listen to that looser that told you gasoline. Don't use Gasoline PEROID! Its too flammable and you won't get the smell out of your car for months!

If the carpet in the rear of your car is dark you can use some Simple Green and hot water to loosen it up. Its going to take several passes but it will loosen up eventually.

Here are some other products that may work, but you will need to test them on a secluded spot of carpet to be sure they don't melt the carpet or leave a huge stain.

Methyl Ethyl Ketone
111, Trichloroethane
Fast Orange Hand Cleaner
Goop Hand Cleaner
Simple Green Hand Cleaner
WD-40 then Simple Green
Brake-Kleen
Head and Shoulders Shampoo and Hot Water
Palmolive or Dawn and Hot Water
Any Upholstry Cleaner

I have had the best luck with the Automotive Hand Cleaners that I mentioned above and Hot Water.

After you do this you need to sprinkle the area with baking soda or baby powder, (if you have light colored carpet), powdered charcoal, (if you have dark colored carpet). you will need to vacuum the area until all of the baking soda, baby powder or charcoal is completely removed. A white rag will tell you when all of the charcoal has been removed and the area is completely dry. A dark blue rag will do the same for the baking soda and the baby powder.

I hope this helps you out! Good Luck!

I purchased a bottle of Crud Cutter in Walmart and it removes tough stains. It is found in the cleaning supplies isle.
