I used to have an obsession for celebs, but not anymore.
Reason? Because I've realised that no matter how much energy/attention you're giving these mega-rich folks, you end up with nothing in return. They don't even know you and when you do approach them by their names, you'll see in some of their interviews comments like these:
"Sometimes strangers come up to me and say 'Hi, *Tom! How are you?' like they know me and I'd go like, 'Excuse me? But I don't know you?"
^ That kind of interview really pisses me off. Makes them come off as ignorant. Hello? If you're famous, it's more than likely people will recognise you!
They say "nice" things just to win your respect and stuff. But when it comes down to it, celebrities are not the people who pay the bills or what not.
So why are some people so obsessed with them?

basically becuase people want to be just like them and they think they are "hott" and most people are obsessed with them because they need a role model to look up to.

I think that people need celebs to look up to as their own lives are lacking or maybe lacking is the wrong word. They say you should never meet your heroes which I believe,because at the end of the day the are only human and have the same weaknesses and faults like the rest of us. Fair enough they have more money and can buy the best of everything. An example would be Jennifer Aniston. Is she happy? Seems to me not for a long time now.Kylie Minogue seems she can't find a decent guy.
Ricky Gervais seems to be suffering from inward rectal inversion since he did some stuff in Hollywood and bombed on stage recently.
I believe it's mostly down to the PR people as they have a tendancy to inform us now who has talent now and who's example we must follow.

The reason some people are obsessed with celebs is because they feel they know them personally, even though they don't. This is because many people spend large amounts of time watching TV, especially shows that feature their favorite celebs. When the celeb in question plays a role that the viewer can relate to, that viewer then feels the actor, who is really just playing a part, is nevertheless "just like me!" Since they mistakely feel that the celeb is 'just like" them, they also feel that the celeb must feel the same way as they do, must eat the same foods, live in the same manner, etc. In short, they feel as though they and the celeb they obsess over have "something in common."
As a result, like a neighbor whom they feel comfortable enough with to talk to over the back fence, or have a barbeque with, they feel that they have the same familiarity with that celeb.
Many celebs nowadays are snooty in public, as though saying "Hello" to a fan is beneath them. This is tragic, because if it weren't for the fans, the celeb would be just another out-of-work actor. Many years ago, during the early days of TV, and also the Golden Age of movies, stars were groomed by the studios, given training in charm and comportment, and in general (especially for TV stars) taught that, when that fan turns on your show for an hour, for that hour they have invited you as a performer and a guest into their home and their life, and you as a guest must act accordingly. Many of today's celebs have, sadly, never been taught that type of humility.
But, equally unfortunately, many members of the public feel that celebs "owe" them far more than they really do. Celebs owe us nothing other than doing the best job onscreen that they can. And the public who is obsessed with celebs needs to find something more worthwhile to do with their time.

Well For a Guy like me, Most guys are obsessed with Celebs because there hot & U would wanna meet them and stuff, but you are right. These Celebs only want your votes and Money so that they could Get more fame. It's sort of like a Competition.
Girls are Obsessed with Celebs, So they could kind-of Be like them, and sometimes they admire them.
It's all a waste of Time though.

My point of view is that bcoz they are well known, that's what makes us obsessed with these people.... even when u do not like the celebrities, but when u saw them in person, of all sudden ur bosessed of getting pic with the celeb....... That's why we are called humans.. We love to get along with people that are well known, rich and etc...... dun worry, they're also human being like all of us...

ppl like celebrities because they look up to them as role models. and plus i like celebs and i know quite a few. blake lewis, jordin sparks, (basically the top 10), miley cyrus, jason dolley, emily osment, i know a lot and they're not botehred by it. they actually like it

You see them as role models, their money and lifestyle is desirable, the closest you'll ever get to that sort of life is if you study them in detail.

I totally agree with you! Celebs are just normal people, like us! But I have to admit...I'm quite obsessed with Ian Somerhalder, but it's not because he's a celeb, it's because he's perfect =)

because they want to be them or be like them...some people get it into their heads that they actually know celebrities and imagine that if they met theyd become the best of friends! lol i dont know how they could think that tho...
