Recently, I joined myspace.com. I reached out to an old classmate. She friend requested me and wrote me an email back. She informed me that she was living in NYC and that she is dating a great guy. She said to me, "people here in NYC are either single or dating, marriage is like foreign here. lol. But I'm so happy for you though." I was a bit offended by this statement. Is it just me or was this offensive? Didn't it seem like jealousy?

I don't think she meant it to be offensive. I think she was just telling you that she lives in a different environment - and what she says is very true. It's like people in NYC are allergic to any committments lasting longer than the time it takes to have dinner, sex and breakfast the next morning (which is, in NYC thinking, a long-term relationship).

I'm guessing that you are married (you didn't say in your question). Well I personally think that she's probably right about NYC. My sister lives there right now, and (besides native New Yorkers) it seems to be a place that people move to, to experience city life. Then later, if they were to get married and have kids, they would probably move somewhere else because its not a great place to raise kids. I think that she is telling you the truth. I was engaged in college, and I heard stuff like that a lot. "You are engaged in college? I don't even have a boyfriend! But good for you!" It's no big deal.

Not at all. Nowadays a lot more people are not interested in getting married, and if NYC is anything like other cities I've lived in, it's a really common opinion in urban areas.

I think you're just a little too sensitive. I could see how someone could take that offensively, but don't worry dear, it's ok. She also had a hint of jealousy. I could tell by the way she said that. Don't worry though, I'm sure it wasn't meant to be offensive to you. :]

I doubt she was trying to offend you, maybe she was just trying to tell you how things were in New York, so I wouldnt be offended with that statement, just say, oh wow, thats cool, im just waiting for the right person.

Sounds like a culture clash. She is probably telling the truth. She might even be a bit jealous. Or either she likes the dating game and didn't mean it to sound bad????

You didn't specify you are married, so I'll assume you are. Since it was a written statement, unless you already know her feelings about relationships, I wouldn't jump to conclusions. It could have been simply a statement about her observations in her "'hood."

Im a little lost, but i get you're point. If you take it like offensive, is offensive... if you take it normal, its normal...Is the way you take things.

But yes it is like a little jealousy.

Sounds like she is overcompensating for being single.
Don't take it personaly, she just has issues about still being single(the same thing happened to me)
