I have 2 cockatiels in a cage, I let them out when I know that no one is going to open the outside door and they'll get away. Cockatiels are not able to survive around here and letting them fly away would be a death sentence for them and I love them and want to protect them. I have two cats, one prefers to stay inside and the other prefers to stay outside but I don't "
lock' them up at all and they are free to come and go as they like. As for Zoos, in a way I can see the need to HAVE them. It gives people a way to see and know about animals that they'd NEVER get to see otherwise. It's ALSO a way to protect RARE animals who would be killed in their homelands and then we'd lose them forever. But, I can sure understand why some people feel bad for them because they're wild animals and wild animals SHOULD be able to be free and wild. Unfortunately, a LOT of people can't see that they have a right to exist for their OWN sakes and try to kill them off for whatever reasons that they do so.

Because many animals that are in zoos live longer than they do in the wild and they also don't spend time and a small cage but are in an enclosure that is as close to their natural environment as a zoo can possible make it then I think that this is a great thing, because it also teaches people how to coexist with the animals in the wild.

But at home that is maybe not so cut and dry. Like the animals in the zoo I fill that a pet should not be locked up all the time but I also know that say a dog (specially a younger one) needs a cage and this is because in the wild animals have homes, places, that are just theirs. So in the house a cage is good to help housebreak a dog, because this is his and it would be like you going to bathroom in your bed. Also they like to have a place that they can have their backs to and look out but still make sure that nothing sneaks up from behind. If a dog does not have a cage it will find a place to make his home(mine chose my shower).
But as I said earlier this is not to be so that they can be looked up all the time and it is a good idea to leave the cage door open when he is not in there so that he feels that he can come and go as he pleases.

I could see the zoos doing it as an educational "service" for the people. But I am not cool with it at home. If something is dangerous enough that it would have to be locked up at home, it doesn't need to be in the home. But then I have the luxury of 10 acres around my house.

I have allergies to pet hair and dander, so I keep no pets at home. I did not have any before I developed allergies. I like to see the zoo and take kids in the family to it. I see nothing wrong with it.

Totally unnatural, but can have good aspects, such as successful breeding in captivity where animals are being hunted out of existence in the wild, and therefore they don't disappear altogether from the planet
