mahler's 2nd symphony [resurrection]
mahler's 5th symphony [check out the famous adagietto]
beethoven's 9th symphony [i know it has the ode to joy, but most of it is gloomy]
bruckner's 8th symphony [i think]

the following are not symphonies but are depressive:
mozart's requiem
siegfried's funeral march [from Gotterdammerung by Wagner, but don't buy the whole opera, it's best to get highlights.]
albinoni's adagio.
william barber's adagio for strings.
bach: st matthew passion. [easter story in German.]

hope that's helpful! i find it useful to listen to clips on itunes first.

Ah! Melancholic, depressing sounds!

1. Faure's Pavane
2. Bruch's Scottish Fantasy, especially the 3rd movement
3. Mendelssohn's Symphony No 3 'Scottish', 1st Movement
4. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 6 - all movements are sad and depressing. Really. Even the hysterical 3rd movement!
5. Schubert's String Quartet in D minor 'Death and the Maiden'
6. John William's Theme from Schindler's List
7. Vivaldi's Summer: Presto
8. Donizetti's Il Dolce Suono from Lucia di Lammermoor
9. Holst's Mars from The Planets

There you go. You can look for them online or just buy a record. Sink your teeth in them and go wallow!

Great suggestions so far.

Try the second movement (a funeral march) of Beethoven's Third Symphony. Excellent work of music.

Technically this isn't classical - but try the soundtrack of "Schindler's List" by John Williams.

Fugue # 15 in D flat minor composed by Shostakovich
now its not as slow and depressing as some of the sad symphonies and most of the 20th century friggen contemporary classical (a bit contradictory since shostakovich composed for stalin) its busy but its dismal. Its depressing in another sense, as some may not call it sad, I certainly would not call it happy.

A lot of Chopin and some Bach are sad and depressing; some of Chopin's symphonies are: Etude in C minor and Prelude in E minor. Look these up and I am sure you will be nice and depressed for a while to come!!!
