In 1974, Pontiac offered an inline-6, a 185 hp 350 in³ V8, and 175 to 225 hp 400 in³ V8 engines. The 455 produced 215 and 250 hp while the SD-455 produced 290 hp. The 400, 455, and SD-455 engines were offered in the Trans Am during 1974, but the 400 and 455 engines were the only other options in the 1975 and 1976 models. In 1976, Pontiac celebrated their 50th Anniversary, and a special edition of the Trans Am was released. Painted in black with gold accents, this was the first anniversary Trans Am package and the first production Black and Gold special edition.

Word to the wise, that 403 has allways been known for over heating. make sure your rad is clean.
If you ever think about going "faster" the 403 is not the best choice, as even the Olds guys think that engine as the "bastard" engine, like PMD 301s.
A Pontiac 400 (check for both mounting bolt setups on the block) will bolt right in place with different motor mounts, not a big deal at all.
Good luck.
P.S. If you find a 400 or 455 PMD engine without the "F" body bolts in the block you can get an adaptor.

10th Anniversary Trans Ams were all silver with silver/gray leather interior. The decals were different shades of red, gray and black I believe. The hood bird was also larger and actually went all the way onto the front fenders where the regular Trans Am bird fit on the hood only.

I actually owned a 79 TA several years ago. When I bought it, it had the original black and gold paint with the bird etc... Mine had the 400 but to answer your question, It's my understanding that in 79' the 10th anniversary edition was silver with all the same goodies.. If the numbers match on your car, hold onto it.. That series of TA is one of the fastest growing values in the collector car industry. I wish I had kept mine.

I'm afraid not, the 10th anniversary editions were silver:
"To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Trans Am, Pontiac created a truly special edition. The 10th was painted in a gorgeous silver and charcoal two tone, accented by red-silver-charcoal stripes. Silver dominated the base of the car, with the charcoal covering the roof, most of the hood, a small portion of the door beltline, and bumper accents."
