Webster's defines real estate as "Land, including the buildings, etc. on it."

The real estate business is the buying and selling of land (ie properties). Most real estate agents help their clients buy or sell land.

Ok - I work in this industry but not quite in the same way as the lobotmised gibbons who show the clients of Foxtons around manky shoeboxes in Wandsworth,

So we understand each other right?

There are two ways to view real estate - one is as somewhere to live and the other is as somewhere to invest

The former will pay over the odds if it's their dream residence - the best way with them is to crank the handle on price until the wife starts having an orgasm and saying "We've just got to have this Giles" and the husband starts sweating and trying to turn his Blackberry into a Casio calculator,

Right now it will work with them

The other kind are like me - it's serious cash flows just like a bond - we don't care whether Camilla thinks it's a darling bijou little cubbyhole - more like "Show me the money"

Those of us in the last paragraph are running away at the moment

Draw whatever conclusions you want

Real Estate is property that can be owned. (like not a park) I mean land and land with buildings or other things on it. The "land" part of it is the core of the meaning.
The term "Real estate market" often is ment to include rentals.
