I did a cheater way and I get 8. :)
Here's the formula:
y2-y1
-------
x2-x1
y2 would be 12, and y1 would be 4
x2 would be 9, and 8
12-4
------
9-8
Your slope would be 8/1 which simplifies to 8. :)

Delta y over Delta x. Just make sure you have a negative sign if the line slopes downward (you need to subtract the point coordinates in the same order.)
