We are having a problem with spyware. I have gone into the processes but I don't know what's okay and what's not. Can anyone give me an idea of what is and isn't good to find on the list of processes?

I totally love the free SpyBot Search & Destroy, which you can get FREE from http://www.download.com

But I also use ad-aware. You see, you can use a combination of anti-spyware sweep programs to ensure that you got everything that might bring you harm.

I good firewall can help to prevent an active spyware program from sending your private information to someone on-line.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Follow these steps and you will not have to worry or learn about any processes or spyware.
This is not a problem at all. Here's what you need to do.
1st, don't waste your time with AVG, spybot, ad aware, CA, spyhunter, superantispyware, avast, panda, kaspersky, windows defender or anything of the sort. Stay away from anything that is FREE when it comes to spyware and antivirus. There is a reason why they free. They are NOT good.
2nd, You need some of the best software out there. Norton Systemworks is very good. That's the only good software from Norton. I wouldn't recommend Norton Internet security, its not that great. Now the best software you should get is Spysweeper with Anti-virus, this software is too good and gets better everyday. This is Elite software. It blocks over 433,000 definition threats, which contain several fringerprints with each(you can do the math). No other software can compete with that or come close for that matter. It catches everything and has active shields. I've used them all and it is 2nd to none.
3rd, after you install and update the software, since its in your system you will have to turn off system restore and then go into safe mode and run the scan and eliminate the virus. then after removal, reboot and turn system restore back on.
4th, (Optional) I recommend a Firewall from Zone Alarm, their free version is so good. Or you can buy their Pro version, but the free version will do more than the job.
5th, any probs during or after you do all this, send me an e-mail or IM. I guarenDAMNtee my answers and will help you in person from IM if needed.

Hello there,

Try these

Popups:
You might have been infected with some sort of tracking cookie that is causing you to get Popups.

Spy ware:
You might have clicked YES to something while on a web site, or entered your login info.

Scanning your system:

Go to these links in this order:
This first one, you need to RUN from that location.

This is a DIRECT link to that exe file.
If it finds a suspicious program, remove it IF you DONT know what it is.
http://www.xblock.com/download/xclean_micro.exe
This one is the same thing, but you go a different way to this program.
http://www.spywareguide.com/onlinescan.php

Also, I use a program called Spyware Blaster. This program ADDs "ActiveX Kill Bits" to the registry to
help keep some if not most of the popups and parasites from installing onto your computer.
You can surf just about anywhere and watch this program do it's job.

Also, while you MIGHT have installed something that messed with your win sock, you need this to fix it:
This is a XP Win Sock Fix
Download and run this and it will want you to reboot. DO SO. REBOOT your computer or this will not work
like it is supposed
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4372.html

The download this and INSTALL it and update it, then run this and remove what it finds.
This is a DIRECT link to the exe file.

The you need a good anti-virus.
If you have AVG, get rid of it and use something else. Although AVG is free (so are many others) it has
it's problems and sometimes (more times then normal) reports false positives.

If you use Norton (Symantec) You need to get rid of that also. It isn't nothing but a resource hog and causes
problems that takes for ever to try and troubleshoot. Also, Norton has a removal tool in order for anyone to
remove it from their system (I say this is bad practice for ANYONE - the removal should have been included).
Norton Removal Tool here :http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Anti-Virus
AVAST Anti Virus is FREE and you can also pay for it.
AVAST HERE http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

And finally, you need to clean your registry out from all the crap that you may have installed and then
uninstalled. To do this, you would need a registry cleaner. MS has a nice one, but would not suggest any
one to use it as it is directed towards the advacned users. However, there is one that I would recommend
to normal users. A program called Reg Seeker. Simple, lite and does not stay resident. Meaning, you load it
and tell it to do it's job, then close it. Simple fast and usefull.

You should use an antivirus program and antispyware software, because your computer is now infected with viruses and/or spyware.

Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/... . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.

Download, update and run Adaware---http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaw...

Now to prevent spyware from being installed in the first place....

Download SpywareBlaster---http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html
SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.

It's main features include:
- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.

www.processid.com does an okay job of explaining what a process is supposed to be doing.

Go to any search engine and type "list of running processes" and you'll find several.
