(Additional details)
I purchased my laptop from a retailer (the BX, Base Exchange), so the bootleg theory probably doesn't work. Still, thank you guys for your time and help.

There is no remedy other than to buy a new copy of XP.

You bought a machine without getting a certificate of authenticity or an XP CD. Now you can't even reinstall the OS. And whose fault is it? Yours. It's like buying the car without having the owner signing over the title.

Sounds like you have automatic updates enabled and your computer failed a Windows Genuine Advantage check when automatic updates ran.

If you have a valid CD Key and Windows XP install disk you can try calling Microsoft and explaining what's going on. They may give you a new key if you can prove you have a legitimate disk. Otherwise, you're going to need to buy a legitimate XP install disk that hasn't been used (are those even still available to consumers or does MS force you to buy Vista now?) and reinstall the OS.

Unfourtunately, you will need to re-install your operating system (Windows). This is most common when people buy a used computer with Windows already installed. The person they buy it from used an install disk w a registration key that was already registered OR the install disk had been modified. Microsoft detect illegal software over the net. You will need to purchase your own authentic OS cds. Good luck.

Who did you buy it from??? If it is an "unauthorized" install it was propably dected when windows did an update. when an update is done a "genuine verification" program is installed. If you click the "this product is not genuine" icon, it will give instructions about what needs to be done. You can always buy a real disk and do a reinstall. This happened to me once, but it still allowed me access to all of my files. I just couldn't do updates. (I later just did a reinstall with a genuine disk.)

The Bootleg copy routine. Whoever you bought your computer from loaded a bootleg copy of windows and it worked fine for 30 days soooo now your time is up. What to do so you ask. Look on the bottom of your laptop and find your windows xp label with the product number, its long, write it down. Now go on line to your computer manufacture and give them your laptop serial no., model ect and usually they will send you a clean copy of windows for about 20 bucks. good luck.........Jim

First of all, where did you buy it? If you bought it at a licensed retailer, you should be able to take it to them and they can either replace it or fix your problem. If you bought it off a website like ebay or a friend for a low price, there is not much you can do.

my guess is that you bought it from eBay,if so contact ebay and report this idiot that sold you ungeniue items and maybe
you can get your money back.if you got it from someone else that you know then ask for the original serial key so you can register it yourself. don't take this lying down take action.i myself had the same problem from a seller off ebay and was given the run around.that's why i don't buy from ebay any more.
good luck with that and take action!!!

Take it back to the Exchange. Also, Microsoft has a "hot line" for activation problems, but I'm not sure what it is.
