Jessica, is it possible that you could have talent? yes, it is possible. What I see in your poem I like, very much. It isn't because the poem has rhythm, or because your rhymes were good (because there weren't any, which shows a maturity that many adults have yet to achieve), or because your spelling was so good (it wasn't bad, but you "do" have some misspelled words)...it was because you had a vision in your head and you were able to put that vision onto paper in a way that everyone understood how you loved your dog and what his death meant to you...without saying you missed him...THAT is so important that I cannot tell you how important it is...it just is! To be able to say a thing without saying "it", without putting the "word" on it...THAT is what poetry is all about. So, yes, Jessica, you DO have talent.
Ask your mom to buy you a few books and start reading a few poems every day. Here is the list:
Norton's anthology of poetry (read it front to back, take your time, and it doesn't matter if you understand every poem, just use your ear and listen to "how" the poem sounds in your head, how it makes you feel, and if you feel the way you do because you understood the poem, or if it was because of "how" the poem "sounded".
Best Loved Poems of the American People. This will show you different kinds of poems, all relatively modern, and you will hear most of them throughout your life as people "refer" to them without even knowing it...but you will, because you've read them in this book :)
And any collection of poems by both female and male authors. Buy these books if you can, because you'll want to go back to them from time to time.
And most importantly, keep writing...you get better by writing...just don't become a poet terrorist who "must" show every poem they write to everyone they meet :) Take your time and make your words worth the time you take.
...and I liked your poem.

Oh yeah, it's good - especially for a 4th grader. My advice for any growing writer is to focus on meaning, not on structure or rhyming. Remember that poems don't have to look or sound pretty, just express (although it doesn't hurt to make it pleasing). I like the appeal to the 5 senses - creativity is a must. Don't be afraid to edit. Try to find a writer's workshop or poetry club at school, although those don't usually get any good until high school. As for this poem, it's up to you, but try to make it sound as if you were talking, rather than writing a poem. When your sentences are slightly jumbled like that, it makes it harder for people to take your poem seriously. It doesn't reflect the time you put into it. Except that, it's a great poem - I really like it.

I think it's pretty good for a 4th grader. It's a lot better than I could come up with! I would give it a 6 out of a 10.

Well I'm not going to be judging in any favors because of age, honestly I think thats good and nice for a detailed imagry poem, however you can and will get better as you get older if you keep at it.
I started in 5th grade actually after reading a love poem, and fell for those kind of poems. Looking back I feel like my older poems were bad and crappy but they were what built me to now. Talent isn't something born with, its what you like and sharpen over time.
Good Luck! If you're interested my work are at www.freewebs.com/flipscar

That is pretty good for a 4th grader! I was writing wierd, illogical poems at your age, and sometimes I still confuse my readers now. Keep writing!

That is pretty passionate for a 4th grader. But death is a very passionate thing.
I say if you like to write poetry keep doing it.
It lets a person release anger or happiness, confusiong or contentment all in words on paper... AND it is less revealing then a journal if someone finds it.....

People feel bad for you, the poem isn't realy that bad, especialy for a 4th grader! I like the last line.
A little advice: Don't start with "I" in every line, cause it kinda gets boring,...

Yes! That is REALLY good for a 4th grader! That is also too good for an 8th grader! Did you really write that when you were in 4th grade? That is really good! I like it how you write on your experiences. :)

In most cases, talent is the determination to write, no matter what, reading masters and asking questions and the finding a way to let go of preconceptions. he greatest writers j8u7st wrote about what they saw.
