Because the romans were trying to create the biggest Empire and as history has taught us that always ends in mass destruction and America has tried doing the exact same thing. They did some things differently and more carefully, a little smarter even prehapes? But never the less they have created an Empire and empires always fall hard.

And yes I know about the rise and fall of the roman empire and you are right they mirrir each other. Scary as hell too.

I agree, America has entered the "age of empire".

Like the Roman empire, the French Empire and the British empire... and quite frankly, the Soviet Union as well. In each circumstance, the military was used to enforce the empire's rule on far away lands, taking the resources of that land (or attempting to), while breaking the middle class with higher and higher taxes to pay for it. At some point it hits "critical mass" and the empire has to pull back and reconfigure.

The U.S. is due for that really soon.
The wars on various fronts, the high percentage of the national product being spent on "defense" all over the world, the fact that the only thing backing our currency is foreign oil (and those foreign lands want out of that deal), and we are dealing with double-digit inflation. We have been lied to by our government, our Congress is consistently passing destructive laws that favor companies over people, and the agencies that were formed to look out for the public safety are actually doing their best to destroy that safety (the FDA is a glaring example).
If we can not rein-in our government and make them do right through political means (electing third parties), then we will be faced with Thomas Jefferson's OTHER cure for a government out of control... revolution.

You're quite right...Not being egotistical or competitive I don't find this a challenging issue. Actually I'm rather relieved as the pressure will certainly be alleviated to some degree. America has morphasized into an empire and is now the butt of the world's ire through bad choices and a fear syndrome. We've burned up a great portion of our own and the world's natural resources with little regard for the consequences. The patience of civilization has waned thin and our own slip into corruption has contributed to our delinquency not unlike the situation in Ancient Rome. The "Golden Age" of Rome is accredited with a thousand years but I don't think ours will make it half that distance:-)
