IN my opinion New York hands down. The Yankees are the toast of the town, same with the Rangers, Knicks, and Giants. The Jets and Mets have some fans too but not as many as the Yankees, Rangers, Knicks or Giants. They are loved.

New York would be up there for sure, but I think right now it would be Detroit. The Detroit area has seen a LOT of winning over the past 25 years.

Think about it just for a minute: The Red Wings have won 3 times, Pistons 3 times, Tigers once, the Lions....well eh.
Now add up all the major NCAA titles fans have seen in the Detroit area: Michigan.....1 basketball, 2 hockey, 1 football. Michigan State: 1 basketball, 2 hockey.

Detroit is unique for having equally passionate fans for both major college sports and for the professional teams. On the same weekend during the fall, Ford Field, Michigan Stadium and Spartan Stadium ALL are sold out. (That's more than a quarter million fans) The Lions haven't won more than 6 games in years and they still sell out every game! Can you imagine the Tigers drawing almost 1.4 million fans the year they lost 119 games? (More than the World Champion Florida Marlins that year by the way) The Red Wings and Pistons games have been tough tickets to get for years.

In addition to Detroit and New York, I'd have to throw in Boston and Chicago to the arguement. My choice is Detroit however.

That's somewhat of a good choice but the city filled with tradition and winning is Chicago!!!! The first major city where a "legendary" team was born. Tradition build on championships and challenges(and sometimes mobsters). And also, where do you find a city now where you know you got a chance to win every year(except for the Cubs at times, lol)???? As far as I know, there's no other city like Chicago.

PS: Here in Chicago is filled with sports tradition. The Cubs were like the "New York Yankees" early in the 1900's. The Bears won as many as 4 NFL championships(which were called at that time). The White Sox(or Black Sox) scandal in 1917 is considered one of the greatest schemes in Chicago history(and also remember, Al Capone had his own Skybox). And geologically, our baseball teams respectively are located North and South side. Now that's a rivalry that goes back over 100 years(Also it is rumored that Bugs Moran(The Irish Mob) once told Al Capone(The Mafia) that if he ever stepped on Wrigley Field, the results won't be good).

PPS: Chicago is filled with tradition and sometimes deceit. And that is why Chicago is the best sports city of all time.

Regional pride aside, there's no real right answer to this one. I think sports in general are universally popular, and fans support most big league sports ... particularly if the teams win. New York has 15 million people in the area, so it had better draw.

Now, there are a few regional differences from city to city for a particular sport. St. Louis was always considered a strong soccer city. Lacrosse does very well in certain sections of the country. But the NFL sells a lot of tickets everywhere.

CHICAGO ALL THE WAY!!!!! Chicago has had the some of the best athletes in the world basketball (Jordan), football player (Payton), and baseball player (Banks). Chicago has a strong run at it but there are others that are up there. Plus I live in near Chicago so that might sway my opinion.
