Scrying Mirrors

This is the information on the handout given in a workshop class when I
attended Spring Mysteries.

Scrying comes from the English word “descry”, which means “to make out
dimly” or “to reveal”. It is a method of “seeing” the unseen. The most
common forms of scrying are crystal balls, scrying bowls or bowls
filled with dark liquid, and mirrors. Less common forms include wax and fire
scrying.

Scrying mirrors are not mirrors at all. They are a tool that reflects
the supernatural or divine. The tool symbolizes the moon, due to its
ability to reflect light. Magickally, the mirror can be used to divine the future,
create protective devices, and look at “yourself.”

Mirror gazing is an ancient art. Directions for divining can be found
in the Grimorium Verum published in 1517.

Most scrying mirrors are simple picture frames in which the glass has
been painted flat black on the back side. This creates a reflective surface.
Some scrying mirrors are elaborate. One of the most interesting is called an
infinity mirror. Within a small room painted black, like a closet, two
full length mirrors are placed at opposite ends of the room facing each
other. This creates an endless image to the person sitting between them.

Regardless of the type of mirror you are using, the procedure for
scrying is pretty much the same. Scrying takes time and practice. Don’t be
discouraged if you don’t “see” the first few times you attempt to scry. To begin,
you will need a quiet, dark place where you won’t be disturbed for at least
20 minutes. Place your mirror in front of you with a black candle between
it and yourself. Turn out the lights in the room. If you do not have a
black candle you may use another color, however you may find that you need to
place the candle just to the rear of and off to one side of the mirror.
This is because a black candle disappears in a black mirror. Focus your eyes
on the center of the mirror. Most people make the mistake of trying to
“unfocus” or “blur” their vision. Ask for the assistance of the divine
and/or your guides. After a while, you will notice the mirror is
sharply in focus and the rest of the room seems blurry. This is the effect you are
looking for. Now let your imagination go and relax. You may see things
or people in the mirror. You may see colors or you may even get moving
pictures. All of these things can be interpreted for your use. Once the
images begin to fade thank your mirror, blow out the candle, turn on
the lights and record the information in your book of shadows. When you get
proficient at scrying you can pose questions before you begin and look
for answers in your scrying or travel inside of the mirror.

A scrying mirror, like all magickal tools, should be blessed and
charged for use. You should always thank your mirror for helping you and the mirror
should be cleansed regularly. The most common way of cleansing a
magickal mirror is to place it under a full moon. Do not use salt to cleanse a
magickal mirror as the salt will scratch the surface. You can cleanse
your mirror in a bath of mugwort or store the mirror with a bit of mugwort
to enhance its usefulness. Magickal mirrors should be wrapped in black
cloth when stored.

Divination Incense

1 part orange peel
1 part orris root
1 part rosemary
1 part mugwort
1 part damiana

Use with charcoal tablet in a fire safe container to burn incense.

In the workshop, when making our Black Mirrors, we used a picture
frame. Removing the glass and laying it on the table covered with newspaper,
black spray paint was used. Now while the type of spray paint was labeled as
usable inside, I still highly recommend having open doors and windows
to ventilate any fumes as I was the only one in class who had to get up
and go outside to get fresh air. One coat of paint was sprayed on and we used
heaters and hair dryers to quicken the pace of drying the paint. When
dry, while you could hold up the glass and still see light through it, you
can still place it back in the frame after using a razor to scrape any
excess paint that leaked around to the sides and other side; with a dark flat
backing it’s still good and won’t be noticeable. After placing the
glass backing the frames, a tea of mugwort was sprayed on the mirrors and
then wiped down. Discussions in the class were you could respray or paint
the glass so it is a flat black, you could have say a black cloth between
the glass and back of the frame so any herbs you place behind it don’t
scratch the paint. Painting and etching the mirror with designs on the front.

Tools of divination (tarot, runes, crystal balls, I Ching, scrying, tea leaves etc) are tools to help you connect with the Divine. Reflecting pools and mirrors (which have been used as a substitution for a reflecting pool) fall under the category of scrying--which is gazing into a pool, lake, cup or mirror.

Although I have not personally used mirrors as a tool of divination, I know this: the bloody mary thing has NOTHING to do with divination.

If you are sincerely interested in Divination, I recommend you read Divination for Beginners by Scott Cunningham.

Bloody Mary isn;t real, it's a Urban Legend spawned in the 1960's. As for Divination, it can work, go look at some books on it in your local library (it;s amazing what you can find in them). I wouldn't concentrate to much on trying to see the future though, it's iffy at best and completely wrong at the worst, if you get anything at all. It's that self gain thing, lol.

Please, DO NOT, attempt the Bloody Mary Mirror Trick!!
I have had some really bad experiences with this. For example, weird unexplained things would happen to my t.v., lights and radio for days after we tried to get her to show herself! I would constantly see things out of the corner of my eye, I'd feel like someone was watching me sleep...call me crazy, but I know how messed up these "games" can get. They aren't always innocent little games!
You can, however, use what I use to help forsee the future...tarot cards. :) If you want more info or want me to give you a free mini-reading, just contact me. I like to teach others what I know about divination!

In folklore and children's street culture, "Bloody Mary" is the name of a children's game in which a ghost or witch of the same name (or sometimes other names, such as "Mary Worth") is said to appear in a mirror when summoned. One of the more common ways participants attempt to make her appear is to stand before a mirror in the dark (most commonly in a bathroom) and repeat her name three times, though there are many variations. Some include chanting a hundred times, chanting at midnight, spinning around, rubbing one's eyes, running the water, or chanting her name thirteen times with a lit candle. Most of these are meant to disorient people. In some versions of the legend, the summoner must say, "Bloody Mary, I killed your son!" or "I killed your baby." In these variants, Bloody Mary is often believed to be the spirit of a mother (often a widow) who murdered her children, or a young mother whose baby was stolen from her, which made her go mad in grief and she eventually committed suicide. In stories where Mary is supposed to have been wrongly accused of killing her children, the querent might say "I believe in Mary Worth." This is similar to another game involving the summoning of the Bell Witch in a mirror at midnight. The game is often a test of courage, as it is said that if Bloody Mary is summoned, she would proceed to kill the summoner in an extremely violent way, such as ripping his or her face off, scratching his or her eyes out, driving the person insane or bringing the person into the mirror with her. Other variations say that the querent must not look directly at her, but at her image in the mirror; she will then reveal the querent's future, particularly concerning marriage and children.[1]

Bloody Mary Worth is typically described as a child-murderer who lived in the locality where the legend has taken root years ago. There is often a specific local graveyard or tombstone that becomes attached to the legend.

On the other hand, various people have surmised that the lore about taunting Bloody Mary about her baby may relate her tenuously to folklore about Queen Mary I, known in history by the sobriquet "Bloody Mary". [2][3]The queen's life was marked by a number of miscarriages or false pregnancies. Had Mary I successfully borne a child, this would have established a Roman Catholic succession and threatened the continuance of her religious persecutions after her death. Speculation exists that the miscarriages were deliberately induced. As a result, some retellings of the tale make Bloody Mary the queen driven to madness by the loss of her children. [4] It is likely, however, that Queen Mary I provided only her nickname to the Bloody Mary of folklore. She is also confused in some tellings of the story with Mary Queen of Scots. Bloody Mary is sometimes said to have bathed in the blood of her child victims (or more commonly the blood of virgins) in order to retain a youthful complexion; this would appear to confound her with Elizabeth Báthory.[5]

The mirror ritual by which Bloody Mary is summoned may also relate to a form of divination involving mirrors and darkness that was once performed on Halloween. While as with any sort of folklore the details may vary, this particular tale encouraged young women to walk up a flight of stairs backwards, holding a candle and a hand mirror, in a darkened house. As they gazed into the mirror, they were supposed to be able to catch a view of their future husband's face. There was, however, a chance that they would see the skull-face of the Grim Reaper instead; this meant, of course, that they were destined to die before they married.[6]

The appearance of a ghostly figure in the mirror could be explained quite easily for the more complex rituals, for example spinning around whilst summoning Bloody Mary in front of a mirror lit by candles. The combination of dizziness, rapid movement and flickering lighting could easily fool the eye into seeing someone, especially when the idea has already been implanted. The participant may think that they have seen a spirit, it is, however, most likely a trick of the eye brought upon by the combination of darkness and fear.
