Punctuated equilibria

And just to be clear, punq eq. does not say that *all* evolution occurs this way, just that evolution (change and generation of new species) *can* occur in long periods of relatively stable and slow evolution (equilibria) interrupted (punctuated) by short periods of very fast change and generation of new species ... even new genera or families.

This period *can* be caused by mini-catastrophe ... where populations are isolated from each other and/or reduced down to small numbers so that mutations spread fast as a *percentage* of each population ... thus producing rapid change and rapid branching. Or it could just be a new mutation that is very successful at generating new species.

But punctuate equilibrium does NOT mean that evolution does not occur without mini-catastrophes.
