All of the answers given so far miss the obvious and most effective solution: don't have kids. The increase in population of the earth is what's driving global warming and even if we could wave a magic wand and make it so that global warming isn't a problem, overpopulation still would be. If you want to have kids, it's best to do it in a third world country and lead a very meager life.

I am a biology teacher and I am all for planting more trees, but I am no longer convinced that we have that much influence on global warming. I was doing research on the sunspot cycles to determine if my father would be successful if he planted corn this year. It needs a lot of water and it doesnt always do well in Oklahoma's climate. (There is a correlation between sunspots and weather conditions that run on an 11 year cycle) I accessed the records for sunspots for the last 300 years and and noticed there was a corelation between the really severely cold years and a reduced number of sunspots during the peak years. One example is the Russian winter that defeated Napolean. Another example is that there is a seal carcass located in Antartica that is extremely remote. I believe authorities have determined it is 5000 years old. The reason that there are no others in the area is that the ice prevents the modern seals from coming. The 5000 year old seal had to have lived in a warmer climate to get to its location and die. I think a more realistic approach is accept global warming will occur and that it is important to develop strategies to deal with it.

The old L5 society had a plan to build solar power satellites that could beam the sun's energy back down to Earth. They could be positioned to either increase or decrease the total energy received by the Earth. The energy could be used to make electricity or free hydrogen from water to feed the natural gas system. Once energy is available it is fairly easy to extract CO2 from the atmosphere and combine it with hydrogen to make methanol or ethanol to fuel vehicles with no net increase in the world's CO2 levels. Most of the materials could be launched with a mass driver, designed by Space Studies Institute, much more cheaply than with rockets and with relatively little increase in the world's CO2 levels even initially and of course, later CO2 could be extracted and stored (sequestered) underground to offset the necessary initial expenditure. This also would cure the problem of second and third world nations wanting to have our standard of living and increasing global warming even more to achieve it, because the net effect is zero.
Check with the National Space Society to see if anybody is still working on this. I am amazed the Japanese, with their aversion to nukes and dependance on foreign oil haven't already done it. They were working on it. I guess their Depression was far worse than the press let on.

You cannot stop global warming now, its too late. The recent floods in Tewkesbury ( England) should tell us that. We have destoyed this planet and soon it will be no longer habital for mankind to live on. In my opinion we can however prolong our life on this earth by stopping using harmful gases such as those emitted from vehicles and nucleur power plants that the us government keep on creating. Celebrity are the worst spokespeople as they harp on about global warming and yet use about 100 times more energy than a large family use for their concerts.

there is no ONE solution. i think it will be many little things combined.
decrease use of fossil fuels, clean up industry, plant trees, stop cutting down trees, curb the "mindless consumerism, and just plain use more common sense in the arena of pollution.

first you'd have to prove it exists (which has not been done yet.), and then convince people that the minute things we do CAN actually contribute to a solution.

the whole idea of "paying for offsets" is nothing short of a scandal to me. if it's not i'd like to invest in that "idea". someone is going to make a killing. probably some of the already FAT cats.

Everybody needs to do their part in reducing consumption of current forms of energy and replacing it with renewable forms of energy. This includes but is not limited to:

- Driving smaller (or even hybrid) vehicles instead of gas-guzzling SUVs, especially since we've reached peak oil (running out of oil, esp. cheap oil)
- Driving at the speed limit (does anyone still remember what the word "limit" means?)
- Do not jackrabbit off of red lights
- If you'll be idling for more than a minute, then turn off the engine
- Keeping your car's maintenance up-to-date (regularly-scheduled maintenance, tires properly inflated, etc.)
- Take unnecessary items out of your car to reduce its weight and thereby increasing gas mileage
- Replace the incandescent lightbulbs (the "regular", typical lightbulbs with which we're all familiar) with more efficient flourescent lighting or even LED lights, which are the most efficient, least energy consuming, and lasts the longest
- Unplug ALL electrical appliances that you're not using (microwaves, tv's, etc.), which could save you a couple hundred dollars each year (remember that if an appliance is plugged in, even if it's not turned "on", it's still drawing electricity -- that's why it's always warm to the touch)
- Of course, turn off lights when you leave the room
- Use energy efficient appliances
- Switch (when you can) to renewable forms of energy, be it solar, wind, etc.
- Recycle, and only use recycled and recyclable products when possible
- Plant trees
- Write to your legislators
- If you invest in stocks, then invest in companies that are working on renewable energy (again, this means forms of energy such as solar, wind, cellulosic ethanol, deep-sea marine current, etc.) -- this will make you money and also gives the companies money to further their work

Get all politicians older then 60 out of office and get only politicians with a lifespan of more the 30 years in office. Make sure, they know, what you expect from them, when you vote.

Keep asking the same question over and over. You might see something new, but I doubt it. Just tap your ruby slippers together three times and say, There is no place like home.

Stop burning fossil fuels for energy, and stop using ozone-depleting chemicals such as R12 and R22 refridgerants.
