a pack of shingles typically contains between 21-27 shingles, depending on the style that you use. Shingles are measured by the "square" meaning how much it takes to cover a 10x10 space, and you need three bundles to make a square-

So a bundle roughly covers a 3x3 square.

"Roof shingles are sold by both the bundle and by the square. A square of shingles is the quantity needed to cover 100 sq. ft. of roof. Shingles are packaged in paper- or plastic-wrapped bundles designed to be light enough for a person to carry, so heavier shingles require more bundles per square. Three bundles to a square is most common, which applies to most three-tab strip shingles and some lightweight laminated shingles. Heavier three-tabbed shingles and laminated shingles require four, or sometimes five, bundles to cover a square. When shingles come three bundles to the square, there are 29 standard-sized shingles (12 in. by 36 in.) in each bundle."

1. First understand the difference between a "bundle" and a "square." Shingles are sold in "bundles." Bundles are packed in plastic wrap. A square is the an area measurement 100 feet wide by 100 feet long, a perfect square.

2. It takes 3 bundles (packages) of shingles to cover one square (100 ft by 100 ft).

3. To determine how many bundles you need to buy you need to measure all the areas of your roof to determine the number of square feet. Simple example follows:

a. I have a 32 foot by 22 foot roof area. That gives me 32 x 22 = 704 "square feet."
b. Now I divide 704 square feet (my roof area) by 33 square feet (area covered by one bundle) and I get 21.3 bundles needed.

c. I know I need to add about 10% for waste but in my experience I have decided not to do this. Near the end of my project I determine exactly how much I never have more than half a bundle left over!
