It's a woman that is nothing more than a pretty vessel to hang on a vain man's arm who is desperate to look and show others how successful he is.

You pretty much nailed it. The term came into existence to describe a young
woman who caught the attention of a much older, usually wealthy and successful man, and he married her so he could add a "beautiful young thing" to his collection of possessions and achievements.

She really didn't mean much to him as somebody he truly loved and cared deeply about. She was just "eye candy" and because a lot of times, this kind of man thinks it somehow gives him a better "social image" if he has a glamorous woman. That's what she IS - a trophy. a "catch". Another one of his possessions and another symbol of his success in the world.

Good question. I just read an article today that suggests the definition of "trophy wife" is changing in our society (see link below). Whereas successful men used to go simply for youth and beauty (a "stacked bubblehead"), nowadays there is a trend to go after peers, successful women who make a lot of money. The result is a so-called "alpha-alpha marriage." Interesting read!

Yeah pretty much.
It usually hints that the man is more interested in being the envy of all the guys by showing off his wife than in the actual relationship.

Very pretty, very fit, something he can show off. Something he knows other guys will envy him for.
And I use the term something, instead of someone, because often they mean nothing more than that to the guy. Just an object and not a human being, not a partner.

A trophy wife is a wife who will love and respect you, honor you and serve you unconditionally. She wont talk about you behind your back, she wont revile you to her friends. She doesn't gossip, she works diligently to keep the house clean, and does everything she can to hold up the husbands good image. She is submissive, and gives way for the man to lead the household. She does not disrespect him publicly, and cherishes him.

a trophy wife is a woman married to add status to the man's life, it may be because she is beautiful or because she is rich or has rich relations, but it is all about status.....a poor basis for a marriage.

To me, a "trophy" wife or husband, is someone who was married for their appearance, they look good on your arm. Rather a shallow relationship if you ask me.

It is usually an older rich man's symbol of power, a young and beautiful woman who is displayed at socials and other functions, just for show or window dressing. Her sole purpose is for show, sometimes it is a marriage of convenience. She gets monetary compensation, and he gets to flaunt his imagined "power"
