Let's see...
4.9 million Palestinian refugees and counting (every day an Israeli bulldozer is knocking down some poor bloke's home in the West Bank and occupied Jerusalem).
Tens of thousands of Palestinians killed
(http://www.thejerusalemfund.org/carryover/pubs/20001127fs.html)
2 generations of a people that wander the earth with no place to call home (usually unwelcome everywhere they go).
5 regional wars fought in the name of Palestine (1973 almost leading to a nuclear showdown between the world's super powers).
Victims of a biased western media that has absurdly managed to demonize them (even though they are the occupied and colonized).
The only people on earth still forced to live in apartheid conditions as illegal walls and roads snake through what's left of their homeland and divide their village into bantustans of poverty and isolation.
..... and that's just the Palestinians. If we were to discuss the other victims of the creation of the state of Israel (including Israel and all it's neighbors) the list would get more ominous.
I would say the creation of Israel has been a catastrophe for everyone, including the Israelis - who now find themselves themselves one of the most despised people on earth living in an apartheid state that inflicts injustices on colonized Palestinians. It was the Israelites who introduced the world to the concept of a divine moral code, the Ten Commandment. And since Jews were victims throughout history, they were always in a position to criticize the morality of other nations.
Today people enjoy seeing the Jews failing to live up to their own code of ethics.

There is a popular misconception (misinformation) that Israel was carved out of a country called Palestine.
This area, prior to the establishment of the country of Israel was a territory ruled by Great Britain, and before that the Ottoman Turks. The name "Palestine" was given to the territory by the British, having resurrected the term once used by the Romans.
in 1948 the United Nations resolution 181 divided the territory amongst the inhabitants into 2 states. Israel and Palestine.
The Arabs did not accept this and fought a war against it, which they lost, and the Palestinian state never materialized. The Palestine territory became absorbed by Jordan and Israel.
Israel is a legitimate nation with the moral and legal right to exist. The prolonged misery of the "Palestinians" is self imposed and can easily be remedied with the recognition and acceptance of Israel followed by negotiations to accept from Israel and Jordan the lands once allotted to them by the United Nations.
In answer to the question, yes I think the Palestinians caused themselves a tragedy.

Well, it happened in 1948 and I think, it's useless to go back and say WHAT IF...
My focus is more towards the present and future. Extremism and violence in any shape or form are not good for humanity. What should try to reach to a reasonable set of measures by reaching to a compromise to provide peace and security for ALL people living in Israel & Palestine.
It hurts the cause of humanity when Israel continues to occupy Palestinian land and violate the U.N. Charter and use "American" weapons to kill innocent civilians in Palestine.
It's equally barbaric when a Palestinian suicide bomber explodes himself on an Israeli bus killing innocent civilians and children.
No voice of peace, moderation and pragmatism can support such inhuman acts, whether they're perpetrate by a state like Israel or an organization like Hamas. Murder is a murder and we must ALL join forces to strengthen moderation and reduce radicalism.
Human lives are sacred

To the Palestinian view inmany and most cases it was. They were suddenly enveloped by many "others" foriengn and a little distinct from their practices. Acculturation is not the historical practice of these lands. Nevertheless, human beings of this world all require rights to travel, settle and make peace with the land wherein they can commune with their history, family, and practices. We must learn to have empathy and compassion and respect and tolerance and travel and settle and make sales and purchases in fairness and equity. We must learn how to move in the world commanding respect for ourselves while giving it to others; we must when damaged by violence acknowledge our ouwn pain, identify it with the pain of others, and make peace together affording all persons dignity, respect, tolerance, property rights, and all human rights. Can't we just learn how to shake hands and be ladies and gentleman after a good conflict?

For HEAVEN'S SAKE ,OF COURSE IT WAS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Forgetting about all the "whys" , "hows", politics etc,the bottom line is that the dumbest most ignorant most racist, most Zionistic person merely has to look at the conditions Palestinians are living in (mostly 50 year old refugee camps) to realize that the creation of a Jewish state has been a monumental tragedy for the Palestinians and the whole world really doesn't give a damn like thae didn't give a damn about Rwanda or about Dafur today.
To even ask such a question in the light of REALITY is offensive !!!!!!

It's a stretch... but in the context of the story, yea... the fact that it was self caused by the Arabs and the Palestinians is glossed over in the article.... It just shows what pathological hate and bigotry can cause.... and, in fact, is still causing... The problem will be over when the Arabs love their children more than they hate the Jews.

Yes, The nations that these people lived in before the creation of Israel would allow them back in, thankfully the Israelis allowed them to remain as full citizens.

It could have been settled peacefully, and still can be. Israel has accepted every peace proposal. The Palestinians have accepted none!

Yes, because many Palestinians have been murdered and victims of terrorism as well as Jews being murdered and victims of terrorism.
To force people to leave their homes, because Jews have a "historical" connection is horrible.
The Jews that are living there today doesn't have a historical connection, but rather their religion does.
Palestinians had nothing to do with Hitler as well. Why are they being forced to pay the repercussions of Hitler when they had nothing to do with the Holocaust?
By that right then shouldn't all Americans that aren't Native Americans go back to Europe, because Native Americans have a historical connection with America. Therefore, Native Americans should start demolishing American homes while people are still inside like Jews do with Palestinians.
