HP is my favorite have had them for years, son recommends an acer. Either would be fine, for college most times they want you to have Microsoft office which is expensive, you can get a program almost identical, and legally called open office. It can be found at openoffice.org

The most popular college laptop at the moment seems to be the HP pavilion dv2000 entertainment PC. That's what I use and I am going to be a college freshman this year. You could find a great deal on ebay, or, if u go to costco I found a 200 dollar off coupon and got mine for 400! I don't remember how I found it exactly. And even though it is innexpensive (for a laptop) it is one of the best laptops out there in my opinion (functionality-wise). I would recommend ebay

A Dell 640 with 512 MB, the biggest hard drive you can get for music and video, 16 bit video card and wi-fi for portability. You can go to E-bay if you dont need a new one and bid and get a good deal. New Dell's like most others are expensive. If you need a new one look for minimum 1.8 Ghz processor, 512 MB memory and a large hard drive, that way you dont have to upgrade in the few months.

Check out the Everex laptops. I had one. As long as you don't wanna play 3D games or do video editing on it, it'll do everything else you need. They have a great screen. Check Microcenter.com or Newegg.com. I would buy another.
